I was slightly nervous before reading it as we share many of the same memories and I was fearful that if the book was out of synch with my memories it could make me feel uncomfortable. Well that was a completely unnecessary worry.
Tim has written a great account charting his time through The Guards Depot, Berlin, Northern Ireland, Kenya, London and the Falklands and anyone who was about at that time will fully relate and be moved by his account, he has a great writing style that makes the book flow and really makes you want to turn the page.
We will forgive him for implying that he was much better looking than he really was, as the numerous photographs (many of which I have not seen before) tell the true story.
The book works on many levels, interesting and engrossing for those who were not there, great memories and some hard ones for those that were, and with the added bonus that I could play "I wonder who he is talking about there" on nearly every page.
Well done Tim, you deserve all the success that I am sure this book will bring you.
Charting his six years in the Welsh Guards, from recruit training at the Guards Depot to service in Berlin, Kenya, London, Northern Ireland and the Falkland Islands, Tim has managed to rekindle many a memory, tell it as it is and make it an interesting story for the reader to follow.
As the Regiment approaches it’s centenary year (2015) it is fitting that Tim has produced such a grass roots, down to earth account of life in the Welsh Guards during a unique and to many life changing, period in the Regiments history.
He has a great writing style, flowing, uncomplicated and easy to read I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Welsh Guards, Military History or anyone just wanting a good read. I was disappointed when it ended - it certainly deserves a place on your bookshelf.
Well done Tim, I read many paragraphs with a smile or smirk on my face. Many more, brought me much sadness!
This was a trip down Memory Line and I think Tim Rees must come out of this with a lot of credit. Thank you Tim for reminding me that I was part of that fine body of men, the Welsh Guards, of which you too, are so proud.
Cymru am Byth!
Tim Rees intelligently describes the twists and turns of his military career.
He colourfully transports the reader from basic training, through successive postings and many anecdotes, to the Falklands War.
With a concise personal insight, we see his character develop and mature along the way.
The icing on the cake, is that you feel that "you were there".
Very Well Done, Mr Rees!
