Although the hostage situation is interesting enough, with many sympathetic characters to relate to; including Martin Dalston, who has inoperable cancer and was planning his suicide in the hotel, Elena Serenko, the duty manager at the hotel who has just got engaged and an American tourist, Abby Levinson and her young son, there is a lot more going on in the storyline. There are tensions between the gang of terrorists, personal stresses that the newly promoted Deputy Assistant Commissioner Arley Dale has to cope with, a very important hostage with very sensitive classified information and, also a man in the hotel who had planned a crime of his own and now finds himself trapped.
This novel is hard hitting, fast moving and exciting. It is also extremely well written, with great dialogue and characters. I enjoyed this very much. It is the first book that I have read by this author, but I am sure it will not be the last.
From my initial slight dis-engagement I ended up spinning the pages late into the night. To date Simon Kernick has never let me down and this book is no exception.
I needn't have any doubts as the story unfolds as superbly as his previous books but the excitement and suspense is raised to a totally different level and although here are a lot of characters in this book and at first you think that you might lose track with who is who, it is wrote in such a way that you remember each character easily and even have your favourites and look forward to the next chapter that features them, each chapter ends in a cliff-hanger style and the short chapters make sure that you don't get bored with any of the characters, I would say after reading all 10 previous Simon Kernick books that this one is my favourite as the thrills and suspense continue from the beginning right to the end. Can't wait for his next book now!
Non-stop action from page-1 and the tension cranked up with every page. It's one of those books you just can't put down. 10 out of 10
All in all, an exhilarating and thoroughly enjoyable read. Not perfect - I would have like to see a couple of loose ends tied up and the ending felt a little rushed. But for sheer entertainment value this delivers in spades.

This is a real gutsy thriller that draws you in from the start, with lots of twists and turns that strand and link together accelerating to a great climax. Read morePublished 1 month ago by morten

Really enjoyable to read, loved the switch of POVs throughout the book as it gave added dimension to the plot and characters. I will definitely check out other novels by Kernick. Read morePublished 3 months ago by mumstheword

Really struggled with this one, usually very enjoyably had to give up in the end, not what I expect from a £4.99 kindle book. Boring slow and hard work.Published 4 months ago by Kindle Customer
