Format: Audio CD
This cd is an extremely well filled document of Beecham's contribution to furthering the cause of the mighty Sibelius's music. The sound quality is, obviously, not what we would expect from a modern recording but the ear adjusts very quickly and one is drawn into the Finn's unique sound world with astonishing ease.

That Beecham was allowed to re-record the fourth symphony soon after his initial recording had been released was a tribute to both Beecham's and Walter Legge's faith in the power of the music to make its mark on the world stage. The symphony was recorded in what must have been a very intense day for all concerned on the 10th of December 1937 at Abbey Road Studios. Sibelius himself thought extremely highly of Beecham's performances of his music and had in fact heard him conduct this work over the air waves at his home in Finland.

There seems little point in trying to say anything about the recording suffice to say that Sibelius himself was very pleased with it. (He would turn his Hi-Fi up to its maximum volume so he could catch every note while, presumably, any guests would sit in the garden with the windows open!)

The other works that make up the 79:05 duration of the disc receive the same loving care and attention that the fourth symphony does. There is not a moment where Sibelius' genius does not come shining through.

I wonder what, in today's terms, these 78rpm discs would have cost? Probably, for most people, a week or twos wages! So, spend £1.99 and revel in what our forefathers left us.
