I have to admit - I bought this CD for one song. I first came across The Kid Inside whilst trawling through the amazing time sucking machine that is YouTube. Although a big fan of musicals, I had never heard of the song nor the show it originated from - Is There Life After High School. A quick search via my best friend who is Google revealed it only played 17 performances on Broadway and had Scott "Quantum Leap" Bakula as an understudy!

What a song! People often puzzle over my love of musicals. I have friends who can't stand this art form because they find it ludicrous why someone on stage should unnaturally burst into song when they could speak the line. For me, it's because musicals are brilliant at taking an emotion and expressing it in a way I could never do. Who hasn't had a heart stopping moment when a teenage memory is triggered by a riff of a song, a whiff of perfume, a piece of old clothing:

And I never know when the breeze'll blow
With a rush of old sensation
Why the kid should wake
And my heart should ache
Everytime I smell carnations

Brilliant. And Barry sings his heart out on this track - with its soaring melody and poignant lyrics, it has established itself as a firm favourite of mine.

The rest of the CD is (to me) successful in varying degrees. I didn't particularly care for Bring Him Home from Les Miserables because I guess I'm too bound to the more traditional high tenor performances from Alfie Boe or Colm Wilkinson. Fugue With Tinhorns from Guys and Dolls is another odd choice with Michael Crawford hamming it up big time.

But these are just are my subjective opinions.

I love this Barry Manilow CD. Songs are judiciously chosen and the arrangements are brilliant. I particualrly love The Kid Inside and Dancing in the Dark, but the whole album is flawless. This really is Barry Manilow at his very best.

Beautiful album and the production is out of this world. I can do without the appalling duet (actually, a trio) with Michael Crawford. Yuk! Standout tracks are 'I'll be seeing you', 'Where or when', 'Never met a man I didn't like', 'You can have the TV' and 'If we only have love'. Barry at his finest, in superb voice and the arrangements are wonderful, big, overblown and pure Manilow.
