One of the many great qualities of this book is Carson's sharing pastoral insights about preserving church unity in the face of controversy over such things as charismatic teaching and practice.

It is a most helpful exegesis of a controversial part of the New Testament. Everyone will find something to disagree with here, but will also find much sane guidance.

Highly recommended

Carson is great to read and clear in his exegesis of what has 'become' a difficult passage. While there is a fair bit of Greek, it is still readable from a lay perspective. Recommended.

Having been converted in a church that was a cessationist, and then spent many years in an Assemblies of God church I've grown up with a chip on both shoulders!! I was never convinced by the cessationist position, but neither was I impressed by the AOG position with dubious healings, doubtful prophecies and a unconvincing theological position. For example, one well respected figure once told me regarding the gift of tongues, 'why would God give it to one christian and not another?' Why indeed?

So because I had never had some amazing 'baptism' and because no one gave me a satisfactory answer for either position, I ignored it.

Then after many years I purchased Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology whose relevant sections concerning the Holy Spirit was refreshingly helpful and Don Carson's 'Showing the Spirit' equally so. This book is not as technical as other Baker Books (helpfully so) yet still manages to present a well thought out position regarding the subject, and offers pastoral insight as well.

If I was to criticise I would wonder about some of his thoughts regarding tongue speaking.....but I don't think I would dare!!

A must for any christian who is thinking about issues surrounding the gifts, and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Sell your shirt for this one.

Written in 1987, arguably as the charismatic movement was reaching its peak; this is Carson's typically detailed review of 1 Corinthians 12-14, focussing on the gifts of the Spirit. Carson is one of the top exegetes of our time, and he uses his skills, including his detailed knowledge of Greek, to explore the text and the contemporary competing claims of the charismatics and their cessationist opponents. In doing so he has no pre-determined agenda for either side; rightly preferring to let Scripture speak for itself.

As someone who came to faith in the charismatic movement in the mid-1980s, I found this book very interesting.

This is yet another great book from Don Carson. He explains the most complex of theology in a way that is easy for a simple minded man like myself to understand. With each aspect of the book he presents lts of different views, critiques them with great detail and then offers an explanation of what is the best way to interpret the verses. This book has been a massive help in my walk with Christ, I have learnt so much about the gifts of the spirit and the best thing about this book is its application. Don gives you examples and practical ways to implement what he is talking about. Best book on spirtual gifts I have read and I have read quite a few!!
Amazon clarity, brilliant application and an all round cracking book!
