This outstanding recording of Shostakovich's 10th Symphony should be placed in the top ten of the other great versions of this Symphony. Neeme Jarvi, who conducted the Scottish National Orchestra on this recording, should also be in the top ten of the best interpreters of Shostakovich's Symphonies, along with Mravinsky, Sanderling, Ashkenazy etc. During the 1980s, Jarvi and the SNO recorded most of the Shostakovich Symphonies for Chandos. The 10th Symphony, along with the 7th,[the Leningrad] and the 8th, are the pinnacle of their work together. The amazing brass, stunning woodwinds and sensuous strings of the SNO are used to great effect by the Chandos Engineers, making this recording essential listening.

This spectacularly recorded disc from 1988 preserves a completely gripping delivery of the tenth symphony. This is one of Jarvi's most successful discs, even among the considerable number of high quality he made with this orchestra for Chandos. This is a clear example that for sheer involvement and edge of the seat excitement, this combination is hard to match when on this sort of top form.

The playing of the orchestra had by this time reached quite a considerable peak of achievement with stronger strings, lithe woodwind and thrilling brass. Jarvi seems to be at his most committed when faced with Russian music and this brings out the extrovert side of his nature. This symphony, one of the composer's finest is ideally suited to Jarvi's temperament and to the striking clear yet weighty sound that Chandos were able to produce. The orchestra is simply magnificent in its response.

The three short pieces from the ballet suite 4 make an attractive and lightweight encore item.

This disc contains one of the most electrifying recordings of this much recorded symphony so far. It easily matches recordings made by other more famous orchestras and high profile conductors. I therefore suggest that this will not disappoint collectors and is well worth considering either as an only or as an additional recording.

I've owned this performance since 1992 and it is the recording I most prefer to return to, despite also owning performances by Karajan and Mravinsky. The first movement has enormous emotional eloquence and the second has real bite. The beginning of the fourth movement is heartrending. It is probably the finest performance I have heard from Jarvi and would justify him being considered as one of the great conductors. (If only his performance of the 5th symphony could have been like this...)
