Overall, this pairing of two of Shostakovich's finest symphonies represents great value.
My personal view is that this performance of the 10th is adequate rather than outstanding - nothing I can put my finger on, because its perfectly well played. I'm just left with the thought "so what's your point?" No real complaint, just no great desire to hear it again. Three stars for an adequate performance, no more. (That said, much more expert listeners than I rate it highly - you may want to trust their judgement!)
The 4th is another matter - from the opening bars it has five stars written all over it. This is an outstanding performance - intense, biting, lyrical, farcical and anguished in turn. Ormandy here perfectly captures the disturbing, profoundly subversive quality that for me is at the heart of Shostakovich's Symphonies. Outstanding.
Overall, this coupling represents excellent value - the 4th alone is worth full price.

Eugene Ormandy first recorded the 4th symphony quite a few years ago, and I am glad it is still available for a new generation of Shostakovich fans to enjoy. Overall, the performance is magnificent. Ormandy keeps the music flowing until the extraordinary final movement, the Funeral March, which is probably one of Shostakovich's finest movements. It may be a little too quick for some, and the recording a bit bright and colourful, too "technicolour" perhaps? As regarding the 10th Symphony, once again Ormandy manages to make the music come alive. Difficult to beat Karajan's version though. Buy this set for the 4th Symphony, you wont be disappointed.
