All of them act as a snapshot in time, giving the reader a glimpse into the lives of people that use and – in some cases – are governed by the river. I love Victorian London so for me, the twisting tale of Joanna Brown and the mudlarks stood out.
I’ve still got Cenotes to read but I would recommend this vivid debut if you enjoy short stories and discovering new writing talent. This is a must for anyone interested in river folklore, the Thames and/or the communities dependent on it – if you enjoyed Peter Ackroyd’s Thames: Sacred River this would be a great fictional companion.
From an Egyptian man dealing with the struggles of marriage, to an English boy attempting to overcome feelings of guilt and remorse, these stories focus on people and their loves and hopes. Binding these stories together, more strongly than the rivers which flow through the collection, is a kind, inquisitive eye that explores human drama, identity, memory, and ecology.
While united, the collection also provides a pleasing diversity and range of times, places, people, subjects, tones, and length. An impressive collection and one worth returning to.
