Product Description

Product Description

Action movie starring Clive Owen as Smith, a down-and-out squatter with both an extensive military background and a fondness for carrots, who wants nothing more than to be left alone. Smith finds himself embroiled in a complex political conspiracy once he aids a pregnant woman who is being chased by a hitman. He takes the baby and goes on the run with a prostitute (Monica Bellucci). The unlikely family is trailed by the intelligent and ruthless Hertz (Paul Giamatti) and his army of thugs.

From Amazon.co.uk

Relax, switch your brain off, stick your tongue in cheek and settle down. If you can do all of these things, then Shoot Em Up is one of the most downright fun movies you’re likely to have seen in some time. Just make sure you’ve adhered to the aforementioned checklist to the letter first.

Shamelessly over the top, and boasting a carnival of action sequences that each seemingly try to out do the other, the core of Shoot Em Up is Paul Giamatti (Sideways) and Clive Owen (The Inside Man) pitted against each other. In the middle is some nonsense over saving a newborn child, and Monica Belluci’s call girl gets put into the mix too.

That said, all plot is thrown out of the window at every opportunity in favour of more action, upping the body count and – heck, why not? – a bit more action. And you know what? Shoot Em Up works, and it does so because everyone is in on it. This is no postmodern pretentious reworking: this is a fun, stylish action movie, and proud of it. It boasts a trimmed-to-the-wire running time, some outrageous sequences, a few bum notes but a whole lot of energy. And while it is, all considered, an excitable action movie and nothing more, Shoot Em Up is also uproarious entertainment, and the kind of film that Friday night was invented for. --Jon Foster

Ok, plot wise it is bits of other films stuck together, yes it is ridiculous and no its not of the same "quality" of some of Owen(Croupier), Balucci (Irreversible) and Giamatti (Sideways... ish)'s other stuff...

BUT THAT'S THE POINT =P

If you try and analyse this in the same way you would other films it is awful.
The idea of the film is just fun! If you take it seriously you will not enjoy it, and tbh i think that's a good thing.
These days films are too cheesy naturally or are far to pretentious to actually be enjoyed properly anymore.
Not that a little pretentiousness or cheese hurt anyone, but its nice to have a change from people who try too hard and those who dont try at all.
I love analysing films books and anything else that's flung my way but films like this and Crank are just made for a laugh.

Please will people stop saying this is just garbage, because it plainly isn't. Its just not a serious film or an out and out comedy... its just fun =D

I would recommend this to anyone who is capable of watching a film without taking it seriously, and to anyone who enjoyed this I would recommend Crank!!!

Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, in that place where a deranged and confused film can become a huge fun. And it is funny, with a constantly angry and edgy Clive Owen and a script and direction that plays with action and vengeance like we ended up in a crazy rollercoaster. My favourite parts are when Clive gets mad at people, especially those who drive with arrogance and deserve to be punished...!
It was my first blu ray ever bought, and it definitely impressed me in HD, due to the explosive photography, sound, editing and camera movements.

This is a great action film. My God! Bullets fly in such quantities it beggars belief. A good story line is made all the better by the gorgeous Monica Belluci. Clive Owen shines as the seemingly undefeatable "good guy", fighting lots of nasty villains at every turn. Not a dull moment.

Written and directed by Michael Davis this tale of bullets babes and a baby with a heavy metal soundtrack is a great test for picture quality the transfer is of reference standard as it is presented in full 1080p encoded using VC-1 and a 7.1 DTS HD soundtrack, the aspect ratio is 2.35.1 anamorphic 16.9 widescreen on this 50 GB disc.

The original theatrical presentation was 2.39.1 the small change does not affect the viewing of this rocking story which has it's tongue heavily in it's cheek.
This Blu-ray presentation is 86 minutes long which is the same as the version from the States , there are only subtitles in English for the hard of hearing which is pretty short-signed from the film company, the bonus features are the same as the DVD which are as follows Deleted/Alternate Scenes, Commentary by the director, Ballet of Bullets - Making of Documentary Animatics and the Theatrical trailer a great disc for action lovers.

Perhaps the least deserving of Clive Owen's uninterrupted run of box-office bombs over the past seven years, Shoot `Em Up is a surprisingly imaginative and bloodily entertaining slice of gratuitous violence that quickly says goodbye to credibility in the first three minutes once our dishevelled hero uses a carrot to dispose of a gun wielding hired killer chasing a pregnant woman before delivering her baby amid a hail of gunfire as an army of hired guns line up to get killed by him with ridiculous ease. Owen's carrot-crunching Mr Smith is the kind of mean and moody man with a past who never misses, never gets hit until the last reel and has a cynical retort for everything as he's pursued by Paul Giametti - Elmer Fudd to his Bugs Bunny - and a large army of disposable goons looking to give a good home to some of his bullets, aided only by Monica Bellucci's lactating hooker who's acting as nursemaid.

Owen seems to have spent half his Hollywood career playing nursemaid in films like Children of Men and King Arthur, but for once he's cast in a part that plays to his limited strengths and doesn't make the kind of emotional demands that have always been beyond him. It helps that his acting has improved over the years, though rather like the similarly wooden Rachel Ward he seems to have finally started getting the whole acting thing right after paying audiences have lost what fleeting interest they had in him. A shame, because he does a nice line in dry humor here as he storms through increasingly outlandish setpieces, a gunfight while having sex and a mid-air shootout with machine-gun firing parachutists among them, all of which are delivered with panache and some originality by writer-director Michael Davis.
