For a film that was made in the late 70s ,Shogun's Samurai which stars Sonny Chiba and Toshiro Mifune is quite gory with the usual spurts of blood and severed limbs that you usually associate with films of that genre ,it tells the tale of warring brothers in 1624 Imperial Japan who when their father dies under mysterious circumstances begin an all out war to see who will become the next Shogunate . Fans of this genre will not be disappointed .

Imperial Japan, 1624. The current Shogun General Hidetada has died under mysterious circumstances leaving the succession in doubt- his eldest son Lemetsu should succeed but he is disfigured and stammers. His younger brother, Tadanaga seems better suited for the role & had backing of his father, before his untimely death, as well as most of the powerful lords behind him. A war between the two brothers soon erupts both recruiting not only government officials but also anybody who is looking for one last fight under Tokugawa rule. Meanwhile the Emperor & his courtiers plot behind the scenes to exploit the chaos & return power & it soon becomes clear that in a winner takes all struggle for power there are no heroes & villains, only winners and losers.

i like athentic japanese films the costumes are are very good the scenery is very good the acting is very good. Its when they can jump about 20 feet in the air without assistance thats to far fetched and took the possible to the impossible for my own taste out of the film give me earthy down to nitty gritty and not kung foo absurdity for it to work

Good video if you like blood and guts. Not a bad story line, but the good actors should have been allowed to show their skills, instead it was rather slasher typical.

definately worth seeing if you're a chiba fan like myself otherwise the casual viewer my find it a little long winded with not enough action so it only gets a 4 star here
