Psychologists have vigorously explored the hidden meaning of shoes from phallic symbols to secret vessels. Some say that the woman who collects shoes is a frustrated traveler; others suggest she is symbolically searching for enlightenment. A pair of new shoes "might not cure a broken heart or soothe a tension headache," writes fashion critic Holly Brubach, "but they will relieve the symptoms and chase away the blues." Even the least vain among us has been known to blow an entire week's salary on an irresistible new pair.
In fact, the average American woman owns at least 30 pairs of shoes; the passionate collector owns in the hundreds. A woman with a standing order for each new variation of her favorite shoe style is simply putting into practice what every footwear fancier knows-when you find a shoe you love, buy it in every color. For if your body lets you down, your feet will still lift your spirits. "Feet don't gain or lose weight," observed Sara Vass, a collector who lives with more than 500 pairs of shoes. "You might not be able to wear your favorite pair of pants if you gain a few pounds, but you can always wear your favorite pairs of shoes." However, the charismatic qualities of shoes have more to do with possession than with use. It's the reason women continue buying shoes even though they wear only a few of the many they own. It's why an adored shoe is rarely discarded, even if it is unwearable.
The indefinable allure of a new shoe unlocks rich private fantasies. We fall for a fabulous shoe at first glance, seduced by the tilt of a heel of the sensuous line of an arch. The whimsy of a flirtatious bow, the nearly edible appeal of a decorative frosting of beads or swirls of embroidery all add up to fatal attraction. The impulse to buy has nothing to do with need-it's the thrill of slipping into a new shoe and a new persona that piques desire. There may be reassurance in an old shoe, but no enchantment. Tedium comes with familiarity, and once a shoe is worn and comfortable, it loses its talismanic quality.
When it comes to shoes, practicality and comfort are beside the point. It may be one reason that 88 percent of all women buy shoes that are one size too small for them. Shoes can be witty or drop-dead gorgeous, but not very comfortable. All too often they don't fit like a glove or conform to the foot's natural contours. But that really doesn't matter, admits clothing designer Diane von Furstenberg. "You look down at your feet and wink at yourself."
And so, at the junction of fantasy and reality, women unhesitatingly choose frivolity over fit. While the idea of comfort is appealing-no one actually wants aching feet-in her heart a woman craves a sexy mule. Sensible shoes command respect, but high heels solicit adoration. A Birkenstock may offer deliverance, but a Blahnik promises adventure.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 February 2020I am very impressed with the content of this book. It is full of pictures accompanied by text, related to the history of each shoe. The pocket size was a beautiful surprise as it makes it easy to carry in a handbag and read. It is a fun and easy read that will give you lots of insight on the history of shoes. Definitely a keeper!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 April 2014I was shown this book originally by my Chiropodist! He couldn't understand why I complain about my feet yet insist on wearing heels! So he went away and read this book. I couldn't believe it! However it served my curiosity so well that I've actually bought 3 copies. 1 for me...of course... The other 2 as gifts for friends one of whom is a heel queen like myself, the other friend is to be educated about the wonders of heels!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 December 2012Really interesting little book. It just goes to show there is nothing new in fashion! (Only one omission for us Europeans - no mention of Dr Scholl - instead talks about Birkenstocks.)

Flipping through the book with always yield an interesting find. Fully coloured photos all placed on white space to isolate the shoe from the background. A great reference.
Pippin O' RohanReviewed in the United States on 7 June 20135.0 out of 5 stars A Bright and Colorful History of Shoes and Footwear: Which Ones Would You Choose?
Many people do care about their choice of footwear for a variety of good reasons, and some of us retain a favorite and memorable "shoe anecdote" to bring out of its box on occasion. As for an affinity for shoes in general, this reader tends to remain slightly sanguine on the matter, possibly because as an adolescent so many repetitive speeches were drummed into my young crown on how one's shoes define 'a lady', that it was enough to be reduced to a state of torpor. Having said this, today in New York there is a lively revival and trend of eye-catchers on the streets of the city in a festival of attractive, decorative, comfortable and sensible shoes to be seen: flats, sandals, spikes, platforms and all.
Occasionally one finds an interesting and fun book that provides not only a rewarding read, but can be interpreted as a work of art, or curiosity. "Shoes" by Linda O'Keeffe, recommended by another reviewer, is such a one. A gem in a boxy design format, it is both highly creative and entertaining. To put this together was no small feet on the part of the author, to make an obvious pun . Not only is it a mini-album with a collection of colorful photos, but it is also an intriguing, fascinating, and sometimes alarming read on the history of shoes and other foot artifacts throughout the centuries.
A small, sturdy and comfortable book to hold in one's hands, flip-flopping it at random you may find yourself looking at the original and beautiful pair of sequined red pumps, worn by Judy Garland in the magical 'Land of OZ', or a bed of Indian Nail Sandals in the 19th century, causing you to do a double-take and say 'ouch'!.
For a better idea on the topic of shoes in this small book, with just the right amount of short text, here is a listing of the title chapters: The Sandal, the Heel, Slippers, the Pump, the Sensible (*I need a pair of simple sneakers which I keep forgetting.), the Boot, the Platform, Fetish & Lotus ones, Art Sole and One-of-a-Kind.
All to say, you might wish to treat yourself to a copy while keeping "Shoes" in mind as an original gift for readers of books, magazines, and collectors of engaging items to enjoy, entertain and learn from. It may also inspire some present and future cobblers in our midst (the actor Daniel Day-Lewis is apparently a fine one). Some of these creations are simply exquisite, artistic, and reminiscent of jewelry at times.
After trying on a few samples of the above, this one is for Julie with some jazzy shoes to dance the night away, and my appreciation to Linda O'Keeffe from whom I have just purchased two additional 'pairs', at a moderate price to boot. Enjoy!

A found this book as I subscribe to an email called "The Daily Shoe" and have become an absolute shoe fanatic because of it. Loved the content! Great delivery from Amazon too - book arrived the next day as expected. I was surprised by the tiny size of the book itself - it is little bigger than a postcard, but nice and satisfyingly thick. Not exactly a coffee-table book but a wonderful addition to one's collection. An absolute must for anyone who loves and follows "The Daily Shoe".[...]
