I think I was expecting a biblically based book on putting the Christian faith into works. And while this book most certainly covers that, it’s less a study on that only, and more a commentary on the new testament book of James as a whole. This isn’t a bad thing. Dr. Hunt is thorough in his assessments and does a good job of not only covering the material from James’ gospel, but also in helping the reader understand the background, setting, and perspective that the scripture was written from. I think if I had picked up a paper copy of the book, I would have seen right on the cover that this was a commentary on the book of James, and would have had a more accurate expectation going in.
Hunt’s commentary is short enough that the book can be read in a sitting or two (which is good since the book of James is so short anyway) but is still long enough to cover the material with sufficient attention. I did not find a lot of “ah-ha” moments from the book – those instances where something that never made since before, comes into clarity for the first time. I did however find the commentary to be biblically sound, and a good refresher course for one of my favorite books in the bible. This could probably be used as the basis for a leader to work from for a small group study of the book of James. A nice job overall from Dr. Hunt.
