About the Author

Martin Shirran and his wife Marion, trained clinical hypnotherapists, pull no punches. Their belief in their Gastric mind Band therapy is absolute and absolutely passionate, and this extends to their belief in their first book. Martin, an ex marketing and PR man, is a gregarious, persuasive individual whose written style reflects this. His natural ability to 'sell' his beliefs about obesity and the GmB therapy shines through in person and on the page. Marion, a former teacher, has done much of the backroom development and fine-tuning of the various techniques involved, and her thoughts on the subject are equally clear and articulate. They both prefer to talk straight to the reader just as if you were in the therapy suite with them. It's a bit like tough love. Tough love that they've put to the test first hand . . . . when they started developing the therapy Martin was a hefty 264 lb and Marion a seemingly effortlessly slim 124lb. They worked sometimes 24/7 much of the time for two years testing, tweaking and developing their therapy . . . . Martin now weighs in 57lb lighter and Marion's understanding of her relationship with food has played a key part in how they approach 'The Hunger Question' She, naturally, has remained within a few pounds, the same weight throughout. Now Martin understands why! Fiona Graham is a former London journalist working as a freelance writer from her home in Spain.

I had been struggling to lose weight for years when I bought this book and it has certainly given me loads to think about regarding the way I eat. I'm not sure how close it runs to the actual therapy if you do it on a one to one basis, but having been an over-eater for many years, I thought anything that could help me re-educate my eating habits and shift some weight would be a good thing. It certainly made me think about how and why I managed to put on weight. Martin and Marion Shirran are firm but fair in the way they put across their advice on living with food, how its OK for you to be hungry, and not kid yourself about how much you actually eat. They use down to earth language to get across their Solution - Shirrans' Solution: The Gastric Mind Band (R), and Martin, having once been overweight himself, is very in tune with those people still trying to lose weight and uses tough love to encourage you to have a normal relationship with something we all have to face every day of our lives. Obviously, this is not a magic wand, and the individual has to work to gain what they want to achieve in the way of weight loss, but this is book is certainly a great support to help you examine the why, when and how of eating.

Like many people I have had issues with my weight forever. I've tried the mainstream weight-loss programmes many a time over the years with no results. Last year my weight ballooned to its highest and it was very worrying - the health risks were at the back of my mind as well as my confidence levels being low. I went to Spain in the summer to have the treatment and what a difference! I've lost 2 stone so far! Yes it is a long way to go so this book is perfect! The suggestions are brilliant and everything makes so much sense - thinking about what I'm eating as I'm eating, slowing down and not finishing everything on my plate is second nature now. Martin has gone through the process himself and his and others' anecdotes really do spur you on!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to lose weight this year - I certainly will be carrying on with the solution and will have this book to refer to and re-read as I get rid of my excess weight!

to call this book the 'new' bible is probably an over statement. but along side a copy of the 'good book' this book will stay on my bedside table forever! if you have ever dieted in your life & if you are at this moment overweight then this should be your bedtime reading. i am currently (& sucessfully) following a very well known weight loss programme. but i do wonder how i will be once i reach my 'goal weight'. will the weight stay off etc. this book covers this & every other morsel of information on weight loss etc. some of the facts on the problems facing an overweight person are 'mind blowing'. i can only urge you to consider this book for your own good health sake. you wont be dissapointed.

I have been interested on food and weight management issues both personally, and in a professional capacity, during a career in Physical Education.
The content of this book written by the Shirrans, offers the reader the opportunity to access the therapies used by the authors professionally, in their clinics. It is written in a conversational, straight-talking style which gives the feel of personal attention to the reader by the authors, and it takes the reader on a journey through the stages of the treatment. Some 'case studies' are included, which demonstrate how people can achieve weight loss by participating in the therapy.
The book is also full of tips and ideas to help the reader to work towards their goals and the technical medical jargon contained in the book is minimal, so easier to read.
Anyone with problems relating to weight management should take a look at this book as it is upbeat, positive and can give the reader the motivation to be able to say 'yes,I can do this'!.

I have been on every single diet there is...with limited success and always regaining the weight afterwards. Having read this book, I lost 10 lbs in the first 2 weeks...and that was whilst on holiday....who ever looses weight on holiday??? What is written in this book is not rocket science...it just makes sense and empowers you to take control. Suddenly food doesn't control your life and hunger is a recognised feeling. It's really easy to read, allows great visualisation and you really feel that it is being written by someone who understands what it is to be posesed by the demon that is greed. The actual 'gastric band' bit is actually a really minor part of the book, it is more about understanding how you got here and where you want to be. Seriously-it works-read it. It's clearly brainwashed me as I have never bothered to write a review before!

The book "The Gastric Mindband" explores both the history as well as the working of the procedure by Shirran and colleagues. As such, it offers both great infotainment in the historical and anecdotal sections and an isight in what they do in their remarkable therapy sessions to help people lose weight.

The self-hypnosis parts are brief and somewhat limited, but they do give the key parts necessary to make it work. As a hypnotherapist, I can make sense of them, and so would people who have at least some prior knowledge of hypnosis. For people who are totally new to hypnosis and hypnotherapy, and who want to use it as a self-help guide, I would recommend reading up a little on hypnosis before attempting to do the sessions for themselves.
