About the Author

The idea for the Shirley Link middle grade mystery series (for kids 9-12) came about suddenly. As I spoke with my pre-teen niece about life, the universe and Dr. Who I realized something: Sherlock Holmes' incredible wit and powers of observation could probably only be matched by a smart teenage girl. So Shirley Link was born! I'm having a blast writing her adventures, and look forward to doing it for many more years with your support. Please spread the word if you enjoy Shirley! A little bit about me: I spent 15 years producing online games for Viacom, Sony, ESPN and AOL that have been played by millions of people. While I found the work fulfilling, I wanted to commit myself to writing. So I gave up the New York corporate life for a writerly one in the Forbidden Forest at 42.5098° N, 72.6995° W. I'm working on another series titled The Camelot Kids.

A very enjoyable read for children.A touch of mystery, laced with humour and recognisable characters makes for a good mix.

There are early middle grade mysteries out there, but most of them have sketchy characters, and a lot of them plod along fairly predictable arcs. This series has an engaging heroine, a lot of attitude, and a much snappier overall feel.

The mystery here is somewhere between the Encyclopedia Brown books and, say, Wendelin Van Draanen's Sammy Keyes books. I've always found Brown to be a very flat and uninteresting character, with no interesting secondary characters to speak of at all. Sammy Keyes is entertaining, but they might be for an older crowd, since they usually feature some personal drama or problem along with the mystery. So, we have a very comfortable niche for Shirley Link in that big overlooked middle

And this book does give us an interesting and engaging heroine. Sometimes she's taken right up to the edge of too full of herself, but she always manages to reel herself in before becoming too obnoxious. Plus, I think that's the risk you take when your character is full of snappy patter and snarky insight, and I think most middle graders would rather have a character who's a little too much rather than one who's a bit too little. It helps that the book is seasoned with two associate/friends who get some good lines of their own, even if they do have to stay second bananas. It's also particularly appealing that both of Shirley Link's parents are sharp cookies in their own right. I'm getting tired of parents who are cyphers or dopes or even worse, and its refreshing to have parents here who ask the right questions and give good advice and guidance.

And, some of the middle-grade-hard-boiled dialogue really is very funny, and very well aimed at the middle grade sensibility.

it's ironic that Donald J Sobel, the author of the Encyclopedia Brown books, died a few days ago. I loved the books and I wished there were more. So I'm happy to see that another author has taken up writing clever and engaging child detective books - but making the new Encyclopedia Brown a confident 14 year old girl with a similar remarkable ability to delve under the surface and find out the truth - ably and wittily supported by her friends (who keep her grounded). The book is very entertaining and you won't want to put it down - and I'm sure you won't guess the outcome before you read it (you'll tell yourself afterwards that you should have known). I'm really looking forward to the next one. Get writing, Ben - I want to read the next Shirley Link case.

i enjoyed reading this book, but would next time read it to my little brother as i think its a bit young for me. i also though that it could do with being a bit longer. im a very slow reader and still managed to read this book in about an hour and a half. however, i thought the description was very good and the cliffhangers made me want to read more. i will definitely be suggesting this to my little brother and also probably my little sister when she's old enough!

I think that this book was alright but the thing that I didn't like was that it was obvious. I felt that it was easy to figure out the criminal. Overall this book was interesting and I enjoyed it a lot.

Great little crime novella, for quick and easy reading. Enjoyable characters who are believable. Better than Nancy Drew a fiesty funny detective.
