The previous review was written in 2003,before the worlds economy went down the toilet! This book, and its sequel, deal with trying to make food interesting when you have almost no money to spend on it!I can't think of a better time for the BBC to give this series and these books a dust down and a quick re-issue as they are more important now than when they first came out.Excellent stuff, tasty, quick, cheap and filling! The Bannana Bread is a real cracker!!!

rather outdated now, but still a good reminder what to have permanently available in your larder and how to cook cheaply and effectively

I have used this book since it's first issue and in really hard times have practically lived on the tomato pizza sauce. However I still go to it frequently to remind me of how tasty food can be created for very little cost, quite agree that it's time for a reissue BBC!!

Like many, it seems, I have sought this book out to replace the copy I bought so many years ago. The advice and recipes here have been invaluable and some of them are still regulars in my repertoire. It's eminently sensible to make the most of the "free" food, "free" heat, "free" yoghurt - or to forage in your garden for elderflowers and make champagne, with little effort and almost no cost. Tell you what though, I'd love a hardback copy...*poke@BBC*
