Shine Like It Does the debut album from wandering Irish/Italian American songstress Eileen Rose, is a delight. Initially, the way she rolls vowels around her tongue and hesitates a moment before launching into a declamatory line like "Rose, never learn to sing the blues" (on the autobiographical "Rose") recalls Drugstore's wanton, wastrel and hopelessly romantic songs. Rose has a similar knack for phrasing and love for the pathos and glamour of the blues. Her poetry and observations of blue-collar America--a loose, engaging trail from her hometown of Boston on to Essex and North London--are most definitely her own, though. Standouts include the lyrical "Silver Ladle" and downbeat, searing love song "Lie To Me". Throughout, instrumental backing comes from three of Alabama3, plus guitarist Davey Bull of her old Boston band, Fledgling. --Jerry Thackray

Eileen has a very rare talent indeed. She can write songs which hit you where it hurts, her perceptive observations on life and love are bittersweet and carefully crafted. And what a voice! If you've not seen Eileen Rose before make sure you do so! Buy this CD! I've not had it out of my CD player in six months.
