I have an old Raleigh Scorpio Road Bike (circa 1995) which has done a minimum of 4000 miles pretty much on original components. Cannot afford a new road bike and decided to do a major overhaul on the Raleigh. The rear mech was a bit rusted and seized so the chain tension was really sloppy. Had thought about taking the mech off and putting it in a meth bath and regreasing, but then saw this mech.

Mech was really easy to fit, managed to split my chain, take old mech off, fit new cable and outer and new mech inside of 90 minutes with really basic tools. Adjuster clicks as it is turned so it makes adjustment of the rear mech really precise. Managed to get mech roughly adjusted.

Went out on a first test ride and the rear mech changed gear with a nice satisfying click, no fuss, no muss. There was no chain rattle at all. Had managed to get the mech set up perfectly when fitting. Really smooth action, really quiet operation.

If you just want to keep an old favourite on the road, then this mech will do the job perfectly, has made my old roadie feel almost new!

The rear mech on my daughters bike was damaged and this was a great replacement unit.
Good value, easily fitted (don't split the chain, just undo the bolt through the lower jockey wheel to attach), and delivered well packed and promptly.

I like retro but I like practicality. The Simplex S001 was working and looks good but at 40 years old would probbaly start to fail and getting a replacement isn't easy. While the Shimano is huge compared with the Simplex I like that the jockey wheels are larger which may help smootheness and keeping clean. First ride was nice and smooth with great changes between cogs. Forum do recommend this derailleur as a replacement for the Simplex and I agree.

Make sure you check which type of fitting your bike has before you order as there are 2 types of fitting (I learnt the hard way).

The jockey looks really cheap and ugly but it is cheap and it works. Had problems adjusting the throw at first and then discovered the low adjuster had badly bent. The chain jammed three times, each time throwing me off my bike but then I realised the screw had bent and guess the metal used is too soft for the purpose. However, I got the screw out and fitted a new one from my tool box and so far it works. I probably should have spent a bit more on a better quality deralleur but this works on a 28 tooth cog and over 7 speeds and with a double chainwheel quite well. Also this comes with its own hanger which most of the derailleur's don't now and i couldn't be bothered to source a stand alone hanger for my 1960's frame.

Be careful on the screw of the first gear, it could get off quite easily with the rotative motion of the gear itself. I suggest to repleace it with a new one, because if it get off when you are cycling somewhere, than you could need a taxi to come back at home

Cheap , but does the biz , and did the cables while I was at it , took me a short time to adjust the gears to run up and down the gears , but these derailleurs are well worth the price .
