Does what it says on the tin - but no more
on 27 May 2003
I bought this item because I wanted to own all the episodes, and replace those I have on VHS. On that basis alone, I am not disappointed, but I do think this was a missed opportunity by Granada.
The box these DVDs comes in does not look like it would stand up to any regular use, and the DVDs themselves are, as far I can tell, just straight copies of the originals. Some are still in Mono sound and the picture quality on some suggests they did not bother to try and improve it.
There are also NO extras that I can find, the discs I have checked so far have a chapter index and nothing more. I would have liked to see a documentary about the filming, an interview with some of the (still living) stars or something to make this a proper collection rather than just a box full of discs.
A single disc with extras on would have gained this collection at least another star.
Having said that, They are the best Holmes yet filmed in my opinion, and Brett's Holmes is always watchable, even if his performance deteriorated towards the end. If you are a Holmes fan, and don't have the series on tape, then you won't regret buying these, but if you already have the tapes, I wouldn't bother unless you really want to save the space.
