Both these episodes are superb in every respect. Brett at the top of his game, Burke and Hardwicke, in the respective episodes here, both peerless. But The Final Problem has the bonus of Eric Porter as Moriarty. This was the first portrayal of Moriarty I had ever seen on film or television where Moriarty became alive. Porter made him just as I had always imagined him but had never seen from any other actor in 50 years of viewing various Holmes offerings. The verbal exchange between Brett and Porter in Baker Street has EVERYTHING - great dialogue, fantastic diction, beautiful timing, fantastic silences and glances. Any aspiring actor should watch this. It is an acting masterclass.

These two episodes of the Sherlock Holmes TV series are enduring favourites - I won't spoil the story in the unlikely event you don't know it already, but it's absolutely essential that they are seen one after the other, and this two-disc set allows for that. OK, there are no extras - but really none are needed - these are classic episodes of a classic series, and at an excellent price. The performances are excellent, and there's none of that "made for TV" feel of some earlier TV drama. Well worth buying, in my opinion.

Jeremy Brett was the best screen Holmes ever. This series was the most faithful screen adaptaion of Sherlock Holmes ever. The period was marvellously evoked. This DVD would have got five stars, then, had there have been some decent extras. But there are none.
