DI Hunter, smart and experienced, is mentoring DS West, young and smart if a little naïve, in her hunt for a missing man. When his body is found they find plenty of secrets in his life and come to suspect an old flame.
I really liked the journey in this novel. It twists and turns, right up to the end, which holds another ambiguous turn I'm not sure I have understood correctly. I'm still wondering where it all fits in. Whatever, it is amazing whichever way you interpret it. The novel is also amusing - DI Munro has a dry humour and DS West is a good foil, her sometimes naïvety giving him plenty of opportunity to exercise it.
It is difficult to review this novel without spoilers as everything is inextricably linked in a rather vague way (just like my attempted explanation) so I suggest you just read it and enjoy a good, clever piece of writing.
Detective James Munro and Detective Sergeant Charlotte (Charlie)West along with Tommy Long are the investigators. Strong characterisation and realistic traits. Not all people are perfect!
For once, a book that matches it's description- gripping thriller.
But I felt the way the story was told from the point of view from two different characters was possibly just a little too clever. The story opens with one character talking about someone and then it shifts to a police investigation into a missing person before returning to the narrative of the original character (and so on throughout the story). I actually went back and re-read the story from the beginning once I had read about 60 pages as I thought I must have misunderstood or missed something. In fact starting it again at this point actually helped with my understanding of what was happening .. until I reached the end which has a final twist that is quite thought provoking.
So if you enjoy stories where you try to figure out 'who dunnit it' before the police, this intelligent, yet intriguing, story is probably for you.
I really recommend reading this. The character of Munro was fascinating reminded me of a more like able Taggart.
I've bought the whole series as I enjoyed this one so much, I look forward to reading them.
