One 'warning', Jean Ferguson who did the incredible research to put this together and deserves a medal, is an actress, not a professional writer. This has the advantages that she obviously knows about backstage customs and can emphathise with Hylda - but means there is some repetition ("Hylda was often viewed as difficult to work with but given her past that's understandable" - yeah, I got that the first time) and whole events and TV series, shows etc are glossed over with little more than a single anecdote.
BUT - the stories about the monkeys locked in the dressing room eating the multi-coloured stage make-up (you can figure out the results) and the one about Hylda being wheelchaired down the pier so she can do 4 shows a night to cover for a sick performer make up for any shortcomings, surely?!
THAT SHE HAD SO MANY 'UPS AND DOWNS' ALONG THE WAY. SHE WAS CLASSED AS A BIT 'DIFFICULT'-BUT SHE WAS
COMPETING IN A 'MAN'S WORLD' AS THE BOOK PORTRAYS. A VERY GOOD READ AND JEAN FERGUSSON HAS DONE AN
EXCELLENT JOB .
