About the Author
Melinda Leigh abandoned her career in banking to raise her kids and never looked back. She started writing as a hobby and became addicted to creating characters and stories. Since then, she has won numerous writing awards for her romantic suspense fiction. Nominated for an International Thriller Award for Best First Novel, her debut book, She Can Run, sold over 100,000 copies within six months and was the number one bestseller in both Kindle Romantic Suspense and Mystery/Thriller. She is also the author of Midnight Exposure, She Can Tell and Midnight Sacrifice. When she isn’t writing, Melinda is an avid martial artist: she holds a second-degree black belt in Kenpo karate and teaches women’s self-defense. She lives in a messy house with her husband, two teenagers, a couple of dogs, and two rescue cats.

Guilt, especially Survivor's guilt can truly eat at a person until they are a shell of their former self. Brooke has been living with her guilt for over sixteen years, ever since her college roommate was found murdered. It has had a huge impact on every aspect of her life from her relationships to her decision making. Brooke teaches self defence to women in a bid to save someone else from suffering the same fate as her friend, following one of her classes she hears a scream which leads her to interrupt a vicious assault. Brooke is plagued with thoughts of the victim and memories of her friends murder, neither let her walk away from the case, even when she fears her own life may be in danger.
Brooke's brother Wade has to leave but he needs to know his sister is protected, asking his friend Luke to step in and keep an eye on her seems like the perfect solution. Luke is in town visiting his Grandmother, which is just an excuse to escape his own life, where he is still recovering from being a victim of a terrorist attack during which he lost a friend/assistant, while he was working overseas. Luke see's this as a second chance and he is determined not to fail Brooke, he has to keep her alive no matter the cost.
Brooke and Luke's relationship has the makings of a disaster movie but somehow Melinda truly makes their relationship work. They grow and learn from each other and I truly believe they could help each other heal, given enough time. The story itself had all the twists, turns and misdirection's that I have came to expect from Melinda. I did figure out the identity of the attacker, however Melinda did surprise me a little with certain turns. Can't wait for She Can Hide!
Brooke is the heroine, and she's still struggling with a tragedy that occurred years ago. I like how she's trying to keep her friends memory alive, but at the same time it seemed like she was punishing herself and unable to move forward in a lot of ways.
Luke, the hero, is Brooke's brother Wade's friend and he's in town for a week to visit with his Grandma. Luke is broken inside too. He has his own hauntings that make moving on and living life difficult for him.
These two come together first out of a sense of protectiveness on Luke's side when he promised Wade he'd look out for Brooke and her kids, but as danger gets closer, things start to heat up between Luke and Brooke also. I liked these two main characters. On the surface they are very different, but once I got to know them better the more and more it was like they belonged together. Can he help Brooke stay safe even as she tries to investigate what the police are already investigating? And what about the future? Present day circumstances and being together force Brooke and Luke to take more steps away from the past and into the future, but will they have a chance together?
At times Brooke was frustrating because she was so entrenched in survivor's guilt, then guilt through association with what is happening now...and she is determined to find out who the attacker is, even when it's not safe for her to be digging into the investigation.Read more ›
