3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. This is book 1 in this new very different shifter series. This first one starts the world building with Mason and Brennan. It's a quick read, I enjoyed it, not quite what I was expecting somehow. But promising.
I like paranormal but this was a just bland and badly written - some things were just stupid. Example -there's a conversation between the techs who suddenly realise they need to free the spliced shifters. One actually says to the other - we can use that bag of money I found in the labs. Really? Sorry but that's the sort of thing I wrote in stories as a child -it was so convenient and smacks of lack of real attention to the plot. Ok I know it was a cheap short story but it still made me wince. Once out of the labs all the shifters seemed to drift off on their own pretty easily considering they were supposed to have been born in the lab and never been outside. It could have been expanded and any detail of the shifters really encountering the real world for the first time would have given this book a bit of interest -instead they went to the pub then went on their way (no joke) . it's disappointing as there's 4books in this series but after this one I can't bring myself to try another even at such a low price. I honestly don't think I would bother if they were free.
