Don't buy if you have a hairy dog or have long hair. In fact, don't buy it.
1 out of 5 stars
Don't buy if you have a hairy dog or have long hair. In fact, don't buy it.
I thought I would write this review after using this vacuum cleaner for just over one month. I bought it after reading rave reviews. Most vacuum cleaners start off with strong suction and relatively good performance, but what about longer term? I should say at the outset, that I live in an average sized single storey house, have a hairy German Shepherd, there are two to four adults in the house at anytime and I have shoulder length hair. This is all relevant, as will become clear! German Shepherds are renowned for the amount of fur they shed. Great balls of tumbleweed gather in corners and roll across wooden floors every day. So I hoover every second day. I should probably hoover every day, but I have a life. This hoover simply cannot cope. I have to empty the container twice during one hoover. TWICE! The process of emptying is also messy. When you press the buttons to open the flap, the dust and hair doesn't fall out neatly into your bin. It flies around, the lid swings about and you need to use your fingers to coax the debris out. It is a very messy business. But that is not all. The rollers get jammed with fur and hair to such an extent that I have to clean them out once during every hoover. This is also a dirty, fiddly job that leaves the floor or work surface covered in grit. Remember I just live in an average size house - not a mansion. Hoovers with wires are out of date now, but I was prepared to put up with the wire for stronger suction that would pick up pet hair from carpets and rugs. I still have to switch plugs once during a hoover which is a nuisance and I think I would prefer to go back to cord free. You forget what a pain having a cord is until you go back to using one. Suction has diminished since it was first bought, but it is still very good (it doesn't suck the rugs up anymore), but it starts to spit out Christmas tree needles, grit and bits of dried mud by about the third room. This drives me to despair; I have just had to sweep up after using the hoover because it created more dirt than had been in the room in the first place. I don't know why it does this; I thought it was because the rollers had got too full of dog hair, but it makes no difference to the problem. It is still spitting out debris across the floor and also when I pick the hoover up to lift it on to a step or over a door sill. Suction is poor to the sides and front edges. Many wooden floors have a wooden lip around the edge. It fails to suck up anything along these edges unless you poke them out with an attachment. I knew that the hoover couldn't stand up of its own accord when I bought it, but it is so frustrating. If you just want to bend down to move something out of the way, you need to find a wall to prop it against. Which designer of hoovers thought this was a good idea? It's a nightmare. One day it is going to fall over and break something. The marketing trades on the hoover's ability to fold forwards to help get under furniture. I haven't had cause to use this - the main front part of the hoover is small enough to get under most furnishings so that function isn't necessary. The fact that it folds in half for storage will be useful if you haven't got a tall cupboard. But if you have, its not a feature you need. So this hoover might work for you if you live in a tiny house, don't have pets, if you have short hair that won't wind around the rollers and don't have a tall cupboard for storage. But if that is the case, buy a cord free and something with a larger dust box and a cleaner method of emptying it. Oh and get one that can stand up or something will get broken. Don't waste £199 on this hoover. I wish I hadn't.

I ordered this as I already owned a shark upright vacuum cleaner but wanted the new duo clean feature as I suspected it would be better on my hard floors downstairs, also I wanted something to more easily get into small spaces as our house isn't big, there are lots of awkward areas especially in the bathrooms and loft conversion.
I was expecting good things because shark is a brand I trust and know to be good quality.
My first impression as the package arrived was how heavy the box was to lift!
After unpacking (the packaging is sturdy), I was pleased to see what high quality all the components were. There are a number of accessories. Firstly I put on the dusting brush and dusted my ceilings - it's really handy for this task. I'm glad of the hepa filter as I have asthma.
Then I did the living room rug. It was virtually driving along the suction is so powerful.
Next I tested it on the hard floors. It's brilliant, it actually picks the dirt up instead of snow ploughing it away from me. I am loving the new duo clean feature - amazing.
After that I tried it on the stairs. I took the wand off and attached the main duo brush directly to the hand held part to make it more comfortable to use. I completed the stairs in no time. The stairs have never looked cleaner! I noticed the dust cup would probably benefit from being emptied by now. It was full because this vacuum cleaner is so powerful and efficient. This is fabulous because its better to remove as much dust as possible from the home when you have allergies and especially asthma.
So overall I was expecting a model not quite as efficient as my shark upright model because this one is smaller and lighter.
What I actually think is this model is superior because of the duoclean head being so efficient and how it fits into all the small spaces in my home. Its extremely powerful on the suction. Useful for dusting too not just for floors. It is not super lightweight - how could it be with high quality sturdy components? I've got arthritis and can manage it though. My teenage daughter used it for her room already - rose gold attracts teenage girls! She was very happy that her well trodden and flattened deep pile rug was transformed back to new! Highly recommended!

We did a lot of research before buying this, having considered cordless Shark and Dyson and trying both out in a shop. The cordless vacuums, according to our research, would lose suction and batteries would become less effective over time. We opted for the corded, in order to maintain good suction in the hope that it would last longer.
Apart from the inconvenience of having a cord (which is very long - so you can go a way without having to unplug it), it is a great vacuum.
Having most of the weight of the vacuum at the top, managed by your wrist, (compared to the weight being at the bottom on a standard upright shape), takes a bit of getting used to, but it is lightweight and extraordinarily easy to manoeuvre around corners. I wouldn't recommend if you have weak wrists or arms, because although lightweight, it does have some weight to it.
It picks up very well and is very easy to empty. I empty it every time I use it. I have a moulting collie dog and the Shark picks up dog hairs wonderfully. You have to regularly pull any hairs which wrap around the roller, but there is a little groove which makes this easy to do.
The stairs attachment is great. It is very easy to use. You press a button to release the bottom stick and floor attachment, and the stairs attachment clicks into place without any trouble.
At the front of the floor attachment is a fuzzy roller, which flicks up bits, near to walls. It is starting to discolour a little, but it still works well.
I have had it for a few months of almost daily use and I think it is fantastic. I wouldn't buy it for its looks, but I think it was a very good choice.

    Plus points:
Powerful, with two brush speeds for different surfaces.
    Led lights for under furniture.
    Incredibly manoeuvrable.
    Lightweight.
Looooong cord. Easily do up the stairs.
Great selection of tools, including powered brush in handheld mode.
    Quiet.

    Minus points:
Tiny waste container. I reckon about 2/3 litre (see photo)
Because of this you need to empty frequently. If you don't, dust and fluff will enter the filter housing (see picture) and you may have to poke it as it doesn't just drop out. Can be messy and unhygienic.
Can't turn off the brushes and it has a habit of rucking up lightweight rugs and jamming them. Likewise, stay away from tassels and electrical cords, the brushes will eat them.

One little observation. When wrapping up the flex, no matter what I do, I can't get the plug to hang over the hook. It's always pointing upwards and held in place with a little clip which doesn't always hold. A little niggle which could have been fixed with with one more (or even less) foot of cable. (See photo)

Grouches aside, this is a brilliant piece of kit and I wouldn't let the few negatives put me off buying another.

Really great quality product, all parts come apart and click together easily, the dust container is fine for one floor of a 3 bed house and really easy to empty. The flexible option for under furniture is brilliant and I love the lights on the front. Quiet, smooth and almost fun to do the vacuuming! Powerful on carpet setting, I was amazed to see the carpet looking so clean after one pass. The long cord is good for moving around, it is a bit of a nuisance having to wind it up manually, but obviously there is no option for automatic retract on a stick vac. Stores folded, another bonus. I don't have pets so I haven't used the attachment for pet hair.
