The flow of the book and easy exercises take readers through the most important steps of understanding the importance of culture, determining what their organisation is really all about and then helping them to create a culture that will deliver more of the kind of success that they most value.
As an independent HR consultant I'm recommending this book to all of my clients to help them on their journeys towards stronger, healthier and happier working environments.
The conclusion is something I really agree with and sums up the books purpose...
People who are happy, fulfilled and find meaning in their work are more productive and this helps organisations to thrive. As leaders (anyone can lead) we can create the right conditions - a work place culture - for people to flourish.
And this book does a great job at getting straight to the point and covering the key aspects of making brilliant work place cultures.
Here are some things I love about this book…
It's concise. Not filled with not so important filler.
It’s simple. Makes it easy to read, process and then go an action.
It’s practical. Lots of exercises to do.
It’s useful for people who have never considered their work place culture and those who have been knocking these ideas around for years but need a reminder
I think anyone who leads in any way in an organisation would benefit from reading this, or even if you just feel like a cog in a machine in your workplace, this book could give you the inspiration for building a new culture from the inside out.
Perfect timing ... for me to read this book as I've joined a new organisation, and am creating a new strategic design team and design service. Taking 2 hours to read this has book has been a huge relief - getting a bit of perspective and thinking about the why, how this connects to what it looks like realised, and creating a plan to realise it - good for the heart and head.
Favourite chapter ... possibly 5 - the simple guide for creating a values working group with suggested meeting frequency, agenda's, and integration points with other departments is extremely helpful. The questions at end of each chapter are also useful. Early chapters with simple framework to think about purpose, vision, and mission also nicely explained.
As often with books like this, the mini-case studies do a great job of bringing it all to life.
Written in short accessible chapters Shaping your Workplace Culture is relevant both for those who have a responsibility to shape culture in their workplace and, more widely, in giving understanding of how people respond and can be motivated to contribute to creating a positive culture.
Throughout this book, tasks and exercises are offered, to help you consider and then move on to implement.
Initially, the section on embedding values through new starter inductions as well as empowerment by spotting talent will affect my actions from tomorrow...
I will then keep returning to this book for further inspiration and methods.
