About the Author

Jay Pridmore is an architectural historian and the author of numerous books, especially about the architecture of Chicago. Among them is Abrams' Chicago Architecture and Design, now in its second edition. To write about Shanghai, he shifts his focus from Chicago, which saw the most important developments in architecture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, to the great Chinese city that promises to play the same role in world architecture a century later. To write Shanghai, he has interviewed numerous architects as well as journalists and other experts. He divides his time between Chicago and Rome.

HASH(0x933ae36c) out of 5 stars Shanghai:TheArchitecture of China's Great Urban Center 28 May 2008

After my trip to Shanghai I put my photo album together. I searched and searched for names for the many buildings in Pudong that I'd photographed from the Bund and river cruise. I could only find a few. Then I got the great idea to get a book!
This book is just what I was looking for. I was able to identify virtually all of the skyscrapers I had photographed and was able to include biographical data as well. I am thrilled. This book is exactly what I expected and more.
Thank you.

HASH(0x9c70b8d0) out of 5 stars I found this an excellent explanation of the architecture I saw 28 Sept. 2014
By David - Published on Amazon.com

Having just returned from my first trip to Shanghai, I found this an excellent explanation of the architecture I saw. It's objective and well written with beautiful pictures. It offers insight into the designs as well as the politics, history, negotiations and process of getting them built. This is a very good resource for the amateur interested in architecture and for the professional.
