Alberto Villoldo has written a credible and interesting manual which I found hard to put down. His first-hand knowledge of North and South American shamanism is extensive. However, there are certain aspects that I found questionable: the book describes certain practices (i.e. tracking former and future selves) which involve an element of risk for the novice. Although the book has been written with cautionary instructions to the beginning practitioner, it doesn't give adequate advice for those who may find themselves dealing with spiritual experiences they are ill-equiped to handle. Not everbody has access to the necessary support systems which Villoldo recommends. If taken purely as an introduction to the shamanic arts rather than an instruction manual, then this book is an excellent read.
