The BBC wouldn't allow the standard Sontaran costumes to be used, so the new designs are outstanding, tough and mean Sontaran shock troopers ready for brutal combat against the Rutan Host, whom we actually get to see them fight in this story.
The Rutans look awesome in both their natural form and in those they have taken over. The model work and the music are superb too...
A lot is crammed into fifty odd minutes but makes for an exciting story.
My only quibble is why still no official DVD of this story? Pretty much everything else has been released so far from Reeltime Pictures... Maybe one day...
The 'Making of' is also worth seeing and a nice little extra on this tape. If your a Doctor Who fan and haven't seen Shakedown, then do yourself a favour and do so... you won't regret it!
Shakedown has a small cast and a small budget. But didnt this formular work very well at times for the classic Doctor Who? Yes, i believe it did. It has to be a case of good script and acting making up for lack of money. And actually, from looking at this video, it doesnt come across as a tiny budget thing at all, which is a credit to the producers and directors and all those involved in this brill spin off.
First it has Sophie ALdred, who is great as Mari, a bit of rich girl, totally different from Ace, yet still a brill performance. And doesnt she look well made up when shes dead?!
And Carole Ann Ford is brilliant, and its nice to see her in something again for a change, and i think her performance is brilliant.
And the Sontarans themselves are brilliant, better designs than any of the Doctor Who serials that featured them. They are totally mean looking!
So, i think this story is great, the only problem i have with it is its too short, should have at least been an hour and a half. but for 53 minutes its brilliant!
