The "Theme from Shaft" is now so ingrained in popular consciousness as the blaxploitation-movie track that it's hard to listen to it without a faint smirk. ("Who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks?") But if you can get past the inadvertent humour, it's still a devilishly exciting piece of music--all hi-hat 16ths, wah-wah guitar, strings and woodwind, like a Norman Whitfield Motown production taken to a baroque extreme. The rest of the album consists mainly of incidental mood music of no great worth: "Walk from Regio's"' "Ellie's Love Theme"--you know the sort of thing. Only two other tracks feature the Black Moses pipes, while the endless "Do Your Thing" takes its place in the catalogue of Hayes epics that began with Hot Buttered Soul. --Barney Hoskyns

Yes, this is a brilliant album in all respects (forget the movie, in which most of the tracks here appear only fleetingly) and this, the ZYX issue, remastered by Joe Tarantino at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley) is the best transcription to CD. But it is compromised by Do Your Thing (none of which was in the movie) having been cut to barely a fifth of its full length to make way for a load of naff video footage.

Joe Tarantino's remaster has also been issued on Stax/Universal (No. 0025218880220) with Do Your Thing in its entirety, but a direct A:B comparison with the ZYX edition reveals the sound quality of the former to be slightly inferior, in part due to the music having been encoded at a lower level.

So, to get the best of this wonderful album, you really need both the ZYX and Stax reissues (the latter seemingly not available via amazon).

What can I say about this soundtrack. It's just pure brilliance. Isaac Hayes at his best. Follow the moods of the film, in this fantastically composed and well written soundtrack, simply has to be the best soundtrack ever. From the Slow mellow "Bumpy's Blues" to the uptempo "Shaft Strikes Again", this soundtrack is a great journey through jazz and blues. Buy it!

This is the original motion picture of the original Shaft, where the famous tune of Issac Hayes came popular, but all the tracks are great with the funk'n soul icon.

Stay away from this CD. The track "Do Your Thing" has been edited down to less than a third of its original length. Stick with the regular CD edition until some other label with brains releases a proper remaster.
