He is a co-author/updater of Rough Guides to Argentina, Australia, Bali & Lombok, Bolivia, Central America on a Budget, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt, India, Nepal, South America on a Budget, and Southeast Asia on a Budget.
He has also worked on Rough Guides to the Baltic States and Paris, co-writes the Buenos Aires Essential Guide app, published by Sutro Media, and contributes to the DK Eyewitness Guides to Chile & Easter Island and Bali & Lombok.
A former news and sports reporter for the Evening Standard in London, Shafik has worked for newspapers, magazines and websites around the world, including the Guardian, the Independent and Time Out Buenos Aires. He continues to write and take photographs for publications including the South China Morning Post, ABTA Magazine, Cool Places and www.roughguides.com, and has worked on research projects for Google.
His travel writing has been published in three anthologies - Earthbound, Make the Most of Your Time on Earth, and Make the Most of Your Time in Britain - he co-wrote the football chapter of Brazil Inside Out, gives talks at events like Destinations London and has been interviewed live on ITN News.
Shafik is an editorial consultant for Amnesty International UK, and has been employed by a range of other charities/NGOs including Article 19 and Social Enterprise London. He is a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers, a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and a trustee and director of the Latin America Bureau.
