Every character in the book is fleshed out in believable detail, including the most unlovable of the lot. No spoilers here but even the most irredeemable are convincingly portrayed by Ms Moore as lost souls crying out for help. There is a humane message underlying this book but you must look for it. As humans, we are all flawed and can only do the best we can. No cloying romance here, gritty reality threads through the whole tale - or should that be unreality? Who knows where to draw the line between the living and the dead, after all? Thorne Moore's spare writing style always compliments the reader by leaving them to make up their own minds. And that's a rare quality.
I’ve said this of her other novels and I’ll say it again: I love the author’s style. It’s so easy to get immersed in the story and feel like you’re there in the characters' lives. Although the places and people are fictitious, it’s incredibly believable and plays on so many emotions. There are many different types of character in this book too and each one is very (sometimes almost disturbingly) realistic. Some chilled me to the core, others made me feel warm and comfortable. It’s very easy to empathise with the main character (Kate), even though there’s always this almost super-natural feel about her.
I don’t want to talk about the plot, for fear of spoiling it for anyone, but I’ll say that it’s set in a very interesting location (a remote mansion) steeped with history and intrigue. I can’t wait to talk about it with other readers!! Definitely one for the book club! I’d also love to see it dramatised for TV.
I have enjoyed every book written by the author but I'd go as far as to say this is my favourite of the lot! There's just so much to love about it!
