This book is so gripping; like the Da Vinci Code, I could not put it down until I had read just one more chapter. What a great idea to turn the legend of Robin Hood on its head, in favour or a darker, more nuanced narrative of an extraordinary man's existence. The book is undoubtedly very well written, particularly for a first time author, but impressed me most by walking the line between fantasy and humanity with such perfect balance. We journey with Robin as his extraordinary life unfolds, without ever losing empathy as the good and the bad surround him. I look forward to the next episode in the story with hope that the author maintains the high standard set by this introduction to the new tale of Robin Hood. Bravo!

So beautifully written that you are transported to a time and place of legend and mystical beings. A powerful and unexpected twist on the tale of Robin Hood, which is brutal and tender at the same time. Our 'hero' is dark and deeply damaged, but even when he commits unspeakable acts you are rooting for him to find peace and happiness. Can't wait for the next installment!

Fascinating take on the Robin Hood legend and it takes you back a bit at first, but as you realise its not going to be the jolly chaps in green you become engrossed to find out more. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

I would just give this three stars - only just. I was expecting great things from this, as "a Robin Hood....as he has never been seen before...." What would be not to like. However, I felt very cheated and short changed. It's difficult to talk about the book because so much of it is pure plot and little else and that would lead to spoilers. The book begins well enough with a young Robin finding his way and Hall does create a believable world of a village with a hierarchy on the edge of the forest fighting for survival. No one goes into the forest willingly and there is fear and superstition about what would happen if you enter at your peril which taps the medieval world's views. Even Robin's relationship with Marian is endearing enough. Where the book really loses its way is in the middle section where Robin encounters Herne the Hunter who is more like a curmudgeonly Tom Bombadil figure than the noble figure you would expect. There is a great deal of crashing around in the forest and far too much plot. Pacing is a problem in the book. Hall doesn't marry together the legend with his fantastical elements. The book becomes more Mad Max at the end and the violence jars. There is also a huge amount of teasing and hinting without resolution. Readers need to be respected and allowed to work out some points but we are never given enough to go on. The ending is very inconclusive which is just plain annoying. Some kind of resolution was needed: a reader has invested some time in getting to this point. I just felt very cross at the
end and hard done.

This book was recommended by a friend, it's not my usual reading material but I found it to be most absorbing. It's really well written and puts an interesting slant on characters we are all familiar with.
It's a real page turner from beginning to end, can't wait for the sequel.

This book was one of those occasions where you are consumed not only by the plot (which you think you know, but you don't...) but by the environment in which it unravels. So many aspects of the forest are planted vividly in your imagination and become part of, and enhance, the storyline. This was my first read of fantasy literature. Whilst I lost track a couple of times, the author blends the surreal with the underlying plot in a way that you readily imagine the characters in their written form.

I found myself racing to the end, but disappointed to get there. Looking forward to the sequel.

Beautifully written and edited, you can tell that every sentence in this book has been chosen carefully and it all adds up to create a great atmosphere with numerous twists and turns. Whether you most enjoy the gory details, the fight scenes or the kick-ass nature of Marian, you will be left wanting to read the next book...

Not at all what I expected.
Thought the writing was weird, and sometimes it just skipped parts, where I thought: "How did it end up here?"
Not the story i was expecting.
It gets 2 stars for the 2 first parts of the book, even though it is not my genre, it was very well written.

I was absolutely pulled into this story, and before I knew it, I had read eighty pages. I'm looking forward to opening the book again, this afternoon, and pick up where I left off. Tim Hall is a VERY gifted writer and storyteller!

It is a very strange book.

The narrative of the book is definitely interesting but there are some moments where you think that Robin Hood is just stupid because of all the mistakes that he makes (especially the last part of the book)

Again, the mixture of tenses in the chapters are sometimes a bit confusing but I suppose that's what the author wanted to showcase Robin Hood's dizziness.

It is an enjoyable and gripping book but I hope that Tim Hall polishes his next one a bit more.

I gave this 4 stars because I find it to be a very creative retelling.

This is a retelling of robin hood and Marian as well as how they to be. A much darker tale weaves its way as Robin, Marian, and the sheriff battle.

This book is a bit slow in places so be ready to push through but the tale itself its creative.
