I honestly didn't know what to expect with this so got a bit more than I was originally hoping for.

A complete retelling of Snow White but a whole lot more in the process. Written well, with enough action to keep things moving along. Beautiful settings and just great characters!

I found this to be a really interesting read. When I started to read it I wasn't totally hooked which I thought was a bad thing but the more I read the more I got into it. I was actually lured in by the book cover and then the blurb. I thought the idea was unique and enjoyed the story till the last page.

Queen Irina has taken everything from Lorelai. She's lost her family and her home and she and her brother have been hiding for many years already. The queen uses magic to make the people of Ravenspire obey. She usurps the land and poverty and hunger are the result. Irina wants to have what she thinks is rightfully hers. Power is what she craves.

Kol is from Eldr, a neighboring kingdom. After a terrible incident he's responsible for saving his country all of a sudden. He's got a dragon form and a human form, but no magic. Because vicious ogres are attacking his country by using magic he has to find help. He wants to make a deal with Irina, but he doesn't know what she's capable of. He makes a huge mistake and Lorelai is the only one who can fix it...

The Shadow Queen is inspired by Snow White. There are some similarities, but mostly the story is original. I liked the world building. There are several kingdoms, there's magic and there are all kinds of interesting creatures. There are three different points of view, Kol's, Irina's and Lorelai's. These main characters have their own distinctive voice and background and being able to see inside their heads makes the story versatile and interesting for the reader. I loved the result, wonderfully organized chaos. There are so many fighting scenes and both magic and battle skills are being used. The Shadow Queen is an action packed rollercoaster, something I definitely enjoyed.

Irina is the typical bad queen. She's found a way to have power and she isn't afraid to use it. There's a reason behind her behavior, but I don't think anyone will have much sympathy for her. She's cruel and ruthless. It was fun to see part of the story from the point of view of the villain. I liked Kol as well.

This is another of those books that pulled me in through the whole ‘fairy-tale retelling’ aspect.

I love retellings, have done for some time. Originally the prospect of such stories terrified me, mainly because I knew how they would end, yet I have read so many with wonderful twists that the fear no longer grasps me. Thus, I was excited to read this one. It sounded a lot like some other books in the genre, yet there seemed to be some originality in place.

Plus, dragons. I cannot say no to dragons.

Truthfully, the dragons were my favourite thing about the book.

The story was a decent enough read, yet for some reason I could never really get into it. Things felt too slow, things seemed too forced. Mainly, I failed to grow attached to any of the characters. They existed, yet I did not feel anything for them. I was watching their world play out but I didn’t care what happened to people. If I’m to enjoy a book, I need to feel some kind of connection to the characters. It didn’t help that the author seemed to be trying too hard when it came to making us feel things towards characters. Following multiple characters can be fun, yet the way it would flicker between them meant I never really understood them as well as I could have. At least with some of the characters, due to some being more fleshed out than others.

It wasn’t all bad, though. There were some moments where I considered giving four stars. This was mainly when the action was happening. At these points I was interested enough to find myself completely submerged in the story. I wanted to continue, I had no wish to be distracted by the world around me. However, these moments were few and far between. Hence the three star rating. There really wasn’t enough for me to give a full four stars.

Nothing peaks my interest more than a striking cover just like this one and then a brilliant synopsis to go with it. I absolutely love fairytale and a fairytale retelling is one of my favourite types of reads. The Shadow Queen then, if you haven't guessed it already is a story retelling of Snow White.

Now Snow White is a story that has been retold a few times before, so I was interested to see how this one would stand out. Although I could see some small similarities (and despite what some other reviewers have said) I still thought it made this story its own. The characters really stood out and Lorelai's (aka Snow White) unexpected power was a great addition to the story. She also the most fierce and brave Snow White I have ever come across in a retelling. The Huntsman also wasn't what I expected at all and as another addition there were also shape shifting dragons! Relating to this, there are some brilliant unexpected twists and particularly in the second part of the book it was seriously action packed. I was racing through it to find out what would happen, and you just don’t see how it will turn out.

What also made this story stand out for me were the vivid descriptions of Ravenspire and the battle scenes that take place. Quite a lot of the writing and the happenings I found made for some quite intense reading. C.J does not hold back at all with her writing here, but it means you feel the destruction and devastation that Irina has brought to Ravenspire even more keenly. The books viewpoint is also split, so we don’t just see Lorelai’s side of the story and I am a sucker for multiple points of view in books, as it adds a whole lot more to a story and keeps the pace up.
