It's well written and quite exciting in places, yet also quite sweet and touching in others.
The loose ends were all tied up convincingly, but enough were left open to make me want to read the next in the series to see what happens to these characters.
I particularly liked the way, the main character, Cimon, developed from being innocent and principled to become accepting and even enjoying his new life. Though at times we could still see glimpses of the shepherd he'd once been as well as the new ruthless being he'd become. It was interesting to see him he's battling with the remains of his humanity and the new instincts of a hunter. Through out the book different sides prevail, until he finds a work able solution, but even then the other is always just below the surface, and that was tackled well, as you don't quite know which way he'll go.
I also liked the way the relationship between him and Inga progressed with out being creepy. Her conflicting emotions were also well handled and believable, especially the awkward early teenage years. I would like to have seen more of Shelpa. hopefully in book two, she'll either get over her dislike of the cold and mud to visit Germany which could be interesting or Cimon will return to Rome.
If this is Elsye Harwood’s first novel, I’m sure it won’t be her last. This woman has so much talent that she’s bound to keep on writing, and I’m already eagerly awaiting her next book.
