After working as a features reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago magazine, he moved to Esquire as as a contributing editor. Robert Kurson is an American author, best known for his 2004 bestselling book, Shadow Divers, the true story of two Americans who discover a World War II German U-boat sunk 60 miles off the coast of New Jersey. Kurson began his career as an attorney, graduating from Harvard Law School, and practicing real estate law. Kurson’s professional writing career began at the Chicago Sun-Times, where he started as a sports agate clerk and soon gained a full-time features writing job. In 2000, Esquire published “My Favorite Teacher,” his first magazine story, which became a finalist for a National Magazine Award. He moved from the Sun-Times to Chicago magazine, then to Esquire, where he won a National Magazine Award and was a contributing editor for years. His stories have appeared in Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine, and other publications. He lives in Chicago.

I don't write reviews for books, but I will for this one. As a diver this book is fascinating. As someone disinterested in history, this has changed my mind.
This is a book you won't want to put down until the mystery is solved. And even then you'll want to carry on reading it just to find out what happens to the divers. Along the way you'll feel cold and claustrophobic just as the divers did, you'll share their disappointment and sorrow for comrades lost.You'll even yearn to know more about the German submariners.
This book is expertly written with a very vivid writing style. The experiences of the divers are shared ones and the WWII background fascinating. I have not read a book like it, but hope to find more.

I've just finished reading this book and I just had to write this review! I couldn't put this book down! You can really picture everything that's happening as you read! I can't reccomend this book highly enough! It reads like an action/adventure novel the likes of which Clive Cussler can only dream about! In response to the reviewer who says that the book is too American, thats because it was written by an American! And the reason we have all these more advanced theories on deep diving is because of the work done by people like Chatterton and Kohler!

Great book detailing how some amateur divers find, research and eventually identify a previously unknown wreck. If you dive you can begin to associate with the passion, sense of adventure and drive that motivates the main character. It's really interesting to read about the risks and work these divers did to achieve their goal and easy to see how what they learned helped make diving today much safer.
