Photographer Peter Sanders offers arresting images of Muslim life around the globe in In the Shade of the Tree: A Photographic Odyssey Through the Muslim World. Sanders's use of light and shadow shows him to be a true artist; the simplicity of these photos is glorious. There are exterior (and even some stunning interior) shots of mosques, including Beijing's 1,000-year-old Niujie Mosque and Al-Aksa Mosque in Jerusalem, as well as astonishing portraits of individuals. Sanders includes photos from much of the Muslim world, including West Africa, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Turkey. -- Publishers Weekly Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Peter Sanders: Chasing a moment
Life behind the lens of a photographer can be enigmatic; not so with Peter Sanders. His work is designed to yield from his subjects their deepest inner feelings - and it reveals many secrets and hidden treasures. His images betray his own unique way of looking at the world. He documents the individuals, communities and architectural treasures that touch him.
He is seen as a serious artist. Illustrating the subtleties of a faith is no easy task. He sees clearly the beauty of Islam from within and wishes to share that with others. "A good photograph has to be experienced". For Peter Sanders, photographers are attracted by light, indeed they are very sensitive to light, the physical light and the light within. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

It is pricey, but is a book that will provide decades of pleasure.
The photographs are meditative yet lively, and include many truly amazing pictures, all accompanied by spiritual reflections.
I have also given this book to my children's school, and have taken a copy to schools when talking to the children about Islam. The pictures say so much in a thousand words, making this a great resource for any educational establishment.
Thank you Peter Sanders, if only there were more books like this!
