Book Description

The Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton is best known for his heroic expeditions in the early part of the 20th century, for his book South, and for being a key member of the The Royal Geographical Society. But in 2010 tee-totaller Shackleton became almost better known for a one-hundred-year-old unique old scotch whisky.

This book triggered my interest in a number of ways; the discovery of a case of whiskey buried underneath the floor of Shackleton's hut and undiscovered despite numerous visitors over the past hundred years, a link with a group of explorers and the limited range of comforts available to them so far from home for so long and the story its self from the making of the whisky to its recreation.

a modern link to a bygone age.

I bought this book as a present for my husband along with a bottle of the whisky which was reproduced according to the original to which this book refers. He was delighted. A great book about a great man and a great story about the whisky itself. Buy it!

Well written and captivating account of Shackleton's journey over a hundred years ago. Incredible day to day story of human relationships and the struggle to realise a dream. Not forgetting the survival of so many bottles of whisky!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, particularly as my wife insisted, with my help, that I read it liberally supported by wee drams of the "Amber Nectar", throughout!

It's an interesting sidelight on Shackleton's Expedition of 1909 that though he took bottles and bottles of whisky with him, so little of it was consumed that it remained hidden under the hut for nearly 100 years, and so great and devoted an effort was made to conserve and reproduce it in our own century. But it doesn't make a book! So Neville Peat does a quick trot through the rest of Shackleton's career to fill it out! It's a bit like going to a concert and finding the Top Billing is only doing two numbers....

This book was a Xmas present and very topical as we both love whisky and both have an intrest in history, so it covers both levels.
