I did enjoy Geoffrey and Paul together and the slow build of trust that was shown in the book building to the final scene, where Geoffrey uses his safeword.
Geoffrey has never been involved in a D/s relationship but craves the sexual and emotional experience of submission. When he finally convinces his boyfriend at the time to participate in a scene with him it goes terribly wrong and ends up shaking his confidence and destroying the relationship.
Uncertain of himself, questioning his own desires, and reluctant to trust again; he is shocked when Paul approaches him and reveals his attraction to Geoffrey. Paul is not experienced as a dominant, but recognizes Geoffrey's needs. He immediately begins to learn everything he can about a healthy D/s relationship in a truly touching attempt to convince the man he loves that he is nothing like his ex-boyfriend and that it is possible to trust again.
This is a touching, tender, and downright steamy short story about two young men with different pasts. Trying something new can be scary sometimes, trust is hard to obtain when it has been broken in the past, and overcoming those demons may not be possible, even when love is involved.
I found this to be an entertaining and realistic short story. The impact of being written from two points of view enhances the storylines development. It is well written with only minimal editing errors that didn't significantly detract from my reading experience.
A copy of Sex, Ties and Videotape was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Geoffrey has just broken up with his boyfriend Brian after two years of dating. He's upset and frustrated and humiliated because Brian posted a sex video of Geoffrey bound, gagged and blindfolded on YouTube. It's Valentine's Day and Geoffrey is nursing his anguish at a bar, when Brian's best friend Paul joins him.
Paul has had a secret crush on Geoffrey for many years, but they were always committed to others. Paul is outraged over Brian's treatment of Geoffrey, and tries to convince Geoffrey to come home with him.
Geoffrey is nervous about Paul's motives but they do go back to Paul's condo. The men begin to work through the issues Geoffrey has concerning Brian and his betrayal. In fact, at a couple points Brian intrudes on Paul and Geoffrey's intimacy. There are nasty words and even blows exchanged. (I kinda felt like the fight scene was a bit over-the -top)
It is not long before Paul reveals the extent of his desire for Geoffrey, and while Geoffrey reciprocates, to a degree, he is unwilling to let Paul fight all his battles.
I liked Geoffrey; he seemed so grounded, and so open. Paul was a bit of an extremist--and had a few anger issues I wished he'd overcome. They actually seem very good together, however, and I was glad that Geoffrey overcame his humiliation. In the end Brian turned out not to be the source of all evil, so that was nice.
The smexytimes were super sexy, and frequent, considering the novella's length.
The story is told in third person through the eyes of both Geoffrey and Paul.
'Sex, Ties and Videotape' is an extremely quick read, somewhere around thirty pages. The story jumps right into the middle of the action with Geoffrey drowning his sorrows at a bar after his breakup with his ex-boyfriend Brian from a few weeks back. Not a nice guy, Brian posted a sex video on YouTube of Geoffrey. Paul, Brian’s friend, or rather now ex-friend, hated what Brian did to Geoffrey. Paul has wanted Geoffrey for a very long time and wants to prove to Geoff that he’s nothing like Brian. Only Geoff needs special handling because of what happened with Brian.
It turns out that Geoff and Paul are a good fit. Geoff is submissive in bed and Paul is a Dom, they seem to confine these roles only to the bedroom. Part of the problem with Geoff and Brian was that Brian didn’t want to be dominant and his revenge for Geoff asking, was to make the video. Paul is very protective of Geoff to the point of not being able to control his anger when he sees Brian hanging around. At the end we see a change in Brian, but we don’t ever find out what caused him to change.
Everything was covered very quickly in this story. The writing wasn’t flowing, but more short and quick. It could be either the author’s writing style, or written this way specifically for this story. The plot was a bit predictable, nothing that stood out in my mind. I give this 3 Stars.
I received a review copy of this book via the Goodreads Don't Buy My Love program in exchange for an honest review.
Geoffrey is having a bad Valentine's Day. He's broken up with his jerk boyfriend, Brian, and is "wallowing" at a local bar. Paul arrives at the bar wanting to take Geoffrey home with him. He's wanted Geoffrey for a long time, but with Geoffrey's string of boyfriends, he hasn't had a chance. He's furious with Brian for exploiting and hurting Geoffrey.
Paul does take Geoffrey home and the sex is fantastic for them both. I liked that Geoffrey was a "regular guy"--not all men are Adonai! :) His physicality added to his characterization. The men embark on a sex-filled ride on the way to finding a HEA--both are unsure of how to act, except in the bedroom. When light BDSM elements are added, things take a turn in a different direction.
I liked this story. It was very well written, with few editing issues. A couple of times, I got lost with who was doing what to whom, but upon re-reading, I figured it out.
This is a good, hot short story. The hints of backstory and characterization are here--I would have loved more. I liked Geoffrey a lot. He really stood out. I didn't bond as much with Paul, though I did like how he stood up for Geoffrey.
I would have loved for this story to be longer, but that is no criticism. There is so much opportunity here--I would read a novel about these characters.
