I have been pleasantly surprised at how useful this little book is as a guide to all things sewing. Everything seems to be covered - machine and hand sewing, embroidery, fabrics and threads as well as various techniques such as smocking, beading, appliqué and the more basic seams and hems. There are several simple starter projects, how-to guides and various trouble-shooting hints and tips. I cannot imagine any bulky 'Encyclopedia of Sewing' having anything more to offer.

But what I liked best is that it is a really friendly book - bright, easy to read and well illustrated. It explains everything concisely and clearly, not patronising nor overly technical. We have become best friends. I always hated sewing in school, and grumbled about sewing on buttons but now I am fast becoming an expert and making patchwork bags and frilly aprons for anyone who will accept them!

Whether you are a complete novice looking for someone to hold your hand as you start out on a new adventure, or you just want a wise friend to answer your questions and fill in the gaps in your knowledge, you will find that this cheap and cheerful book is all you need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tons of great photos and diagrams, clear, concise! 14 Dec. 2010
By Debbie H. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I ordered this book from the library before buying. I only buy about 1 in 100 books I borrow from the library. But, this one is a great resource I want to keep! So much in sewing really needs to be demonstrated for me to understand; I'm a visiual learner. But this book uses so many diagrams and photos, it's a breeze to follow. I read the negative review, and the other reviews from the same person. She states she is 70 years old and chances are she has had extensive experience and is looking for specific info. In contrast, I'm 42 and have been sewing off and on since I was 10. She is right, there isn't much info about zippers, but twin needles are mentioned/explained several times. I am not an expert by any means, but not a novice either. The tips in this book will help me sew quicker, better, and more creatively than before. Furthermore, it is a resource I plan to refer to when I need quick, simple, easy to follow advice.

This book is my new sewing bible. There's almost no reason to own any other sewing book. This one explains everything so well and has great pictures for each explanation. Thank you for sending it so quickly!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay 10 Feb. 2014
By InesJ - Published on Amazon.com

In reviewing this I have to think of how handy this would have been when I started sewing, and I think it would have been a good little reference book. I have been sewing for a while now so I pretty much flipped through it and put it on the shelf, where it has sat untouched since then. I am planning to give it to a friend of mine who is just starting out in sewing as I think she would find it of more use.
I also think the title of the book is a bit misleading as it is full of the same info that every single other book on sewing is also full of. It is also very much for beginners in my opinion. It's also not a particularly long book. As a sewing reference book to keep next to your sewing table, I would give it 2 stars and steer you towards the Reader's Digest book instead (which is practically a Bible for those who sew, by the sounds of it!) But, for a beginner it would be higher rating. So I compromised with 3 stars - it is okay, but probably better to source from the local library than buy to use as a guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Book. Makes a Great Gift! 2 Jun. 2011
By DugFinn - Published on Amazon.com

I originally saw this book at my local book store where I browsed through it for almost an hour. I didn't immediately buy it because I didn't have the cash on me, but it was full of such handy information and wonderful charts and tips, that I snatched it up on Amazon the moment I got on line - And boy, was it a great purchase! I've skimmed through most of it, stopping and reading anything that looks interesting - which is pretty much every page! I'm about half way through reading it page by page now and it has already given me so many tips and ideas - totally worth having bought it! I highly recommend it! I'm thinking about getting a copy as a gift for my friend too since she's all into costume making.
