I cannot praise this book highly enough. If you are a complete novice, then this is the book for you. It takes you through all the basics, it even tells you how to thread a needle correctly. There is also humour in this book which I like, eg, "If you hear the word grain and think of oatmeal, you're not quite ready to lay out your pattern" I must also mention the reviewer "sarah" who did not like the greeting card made using buttons amongst other things. This was taken completely out of context, the reason for the card was to ease the beginner into using the sewing machine, and to get some practice sewing on buttons using the machines zigzag, also, cutting out half of the tissue paper Christmas tree shape, just as you would do with a pattern. It is much better to make a mistake on a card, rather than on some expensive fabric. One reviewer recommended buying "The complete book of sewing (needlecraft) by Alison Smith" Well, I did buy that particular book at the same time, and I have to say that for A COMPLETE BEGINNER I prefer this book. I am sure that when I progress, I will be very pleased with "The complete book of sewing" but for this rookie, "Sewing For Dummies" is perfect.

This book has to be the best sewing book I've found, I was after a something that would help me through some of my more challenging projects. This book has everything you need whether you're new to sewing or experienced, from all the basics, to more advance in tailoring, soft furnishings etc.

Straight forward explanations and clear diagram's make this this book easy to follow.

In my opinion, a copy should be in every sewers kit !

This book is great for beginner sewers and also for those with more experience that need a little help with certain techniques. Detailed and simple instructions given for all the techniques listed in the book. Covers a massive range of topics and has projects to be completed along the way. The only reason I am giving this book 4 stars is that I found the projects to be a little out-dated and more focused with home decor as opposed to clothing... but this is just personal preference really. Overall a great book, very handy to have.

I purchased this dummies book along with other sewing books.
Overall I was not hugely impressed when comparing it to the others.
I would advise anyone looking for a sewing book to add 'The Complete Book of Sewing (Needlecraft)by Alison Smith'
to their collection, even if you do go ahead and buy this dummies book.

I don't consider myself to be a novice when it comes to sewing machines but there is still a lot I want to learn about sewing and adjusting garments. Why throw out a perfectly good pair of trousers when they need taking up/down or letting in or out? This book tells you how to do it. Fancy putting a couple of darts in that blose to make it more fitting? Yup, it tells you the best way of doing that too. It shows you how to insert or replace a zip (something I've always shied from because I didn't have a clue). Buttonholes? No problem. It also has a few basic patterns included. It also includes bits you can do on an overlocker.

This book is the ideal companion whether you are a novice or need to brush up on your skills. I don't know what I'd do without it now!

The title does what it says, if you, like me, are a begginner to dressmaking, are stuck on part of a project or ( because the problem is so basic) you're too embaressed to ask your tutor etc then this book is a must! I dip into it all the time. Has saved me a lot of time and money

A great beginners book - does exactly what it says on the tin for the most part. It teaches you all the basic things you need to know to make up your first dress pattern. I didn't give it five stars though because I think it needed more illustrations in places (we are dummies, after all), and I found some of the terms were used as if you already knew what they meant, such as 'stitching-in-the-ditch'. Which I still don't get...

Most of us remember doing some sewing with mum or at school, and then wish we knew how to do all the other bits that we either forgot, or someone else did for us. This is where I came in, with a wish to just make a dress that fits better, or to be able to do quick repairs, so after being given the highly rated (a Which best buy) Brother BC2100 Sewing Machine I needed a bit of a helping hand.

This book is great for filling in all those gaps such as using patterns, choosing threads and other bits. It would be OK too for a beginner, but as this is a large subject, you may want to have this as a partner book alongside something in more depth. But if you have vague memories, and a little skill, then you shouldnt need anything else. Like all Dummies books, this can be read straight, or just dipped into. Well worth the money, which is less than the cost of even half a decent garments material and findings.
