This is the ultimate bible for novice and beginner seamstresses, tailors and those who just love to sew. I was a little skeptical as to what book to buy, as there are so many, and after trawling through loads of reviews and items, I decided on this one. It is clear, easy to read and has an informative section at the front telling you what basics you should have in your sewing kit, the different properties and weaves of fabric and also which needles and thread to use on it. It also has a section on patterns, which has enlightened me a lot as I tended not to work to them as I thought they were more hassle than they were worth. The pictures are clear and not too small; and for a hardback this is very good value for money.
The different chapters are on:
Sewing equipment
Fabrics
Stitch essentials
Patterns
Gathers, ruffles, tucks, darts and pleats
Hems and edges
Fasteners
Pockets
Waistline, belts and tie-backs
Facings and necklines
Collars
Sleeves and sleeve finishes
Decorative techniques
There's also a very useful glossary too.

The only thing you will need to worry about is what you're going to make, and what fabric it will be.

I got this book to sharpen my(old) school girl sewing skills, and its brilliant.
It shows you in very easy terms how to do the basics , sew in a zip , finish a seam and the different types of stitches.
Ideal if youre just getting into sewing or like me just wants to refresh some sewing skills.

Excellent book, but a smaller size(physically) of "the sewing book"

I didn't know so purchased.

Text and pictures are smaller and it's not worth getting... I prefer the larger version, easier to read and therefore, follow.

I would suggest for anyone who's interested in learning to sew, & highly recommend this author

But feel a bit cheated by it being a copy...

Fantastic follow up to The Sewing Book.

Sew Step by Step covers all the basic techniques with helpful pictures to guide you on your way. A brilliant book to give as a gift to someone who wants to start sewing or as a helpful "turn to" to have as part of your core collection of sewing books. Alison really knows what she is talking about and is an expert in her field.

This is an excellent resource to have for beginners and experienced sewers alike, I'm not proficient at sewing and needed a handbook with lots of techniques and ideas, and this is perfect. It covers basic principles, like tacking and plain seams, up to more complicated techniques that beginners might have had problems with or experienced sewers need a reminder for, like pleats, covered buttons, invisible zips, casings, and much more. Many of the techniques can be applied to home furnishings as well as dressmaking. Everything is made clear using full colour photographs throughout.

I highly recommend this book, whether you're just starting out or would like a handbook to have at your side when tackling slightly more complicated techniques.

I would also recommend keeping an eye out for this book at your local Aldi when they routinely have these books in their SpecialBuys. They have the lovely quality hardback cover books at a fraction of the Amazon prices. For example. I have the Crochet, Knit and Sew versions in this series and all of them were the latest (2014) editions and only 3-99 each. Worth keeping in mind if you have an Aldi local to you!

As a newbie to making clothes, this book is invaluable in helping me to understand everything from cutting patterns, adjusting patterns, hems, inserting zips, just about everything you need to know when you begin clothe making. I would recommend it.

I bought this book based on the very good reviews it was getting but upon receiving it, I was highly disappointed. There is a lot to be desired about the book. Especially since I'm a beginner sewer I found that there were many gaps in between topics which led me to make loads of guess work and my sewing projects not looking great. Plus some information were really just skimmed over like how to sew straight lines (this is so basic yet important I wonder why most writers don't talk about it!), neatening seams, turning work, etc. All these knowledge I had to learn through Googling online for free tutorials until I reached a point where I realised I didn't need the book to begin with. Also the projects in there went straight to dressmaking which is not my goal at this stage (I want to make small accessories like purses and glasses cases as presents). I have returned this book.

Easy to understand which is important for me as I am a complete beginner. Images sharp and clear, good size book that has a great balance between easy to manage size book and instruction images being a good clear size. Taking you through how to measure the body, how to choose fabric and cut it with in depth explanations right, the way through to finishing touches, seems very comprehensive so far.
