Product Description

Review

"The author has provided a valuable resource for practitioners in offering a concise, step-by-step, concrete, yet scientifically based approach to the assessment and intervention of challenging behaviors. For this reviewer, the primary index of the value of text resources is their placement on my office book shelves. This one is on the shelf behind my desk, not across the room; I can, and have, accessed it often with a 180-degree swivel of my chair." --"Journal of Psychoeducational Assessment "

A well-written, practical summary of the most recent and most exciting advances in functional communication training....This book will be a valuable resource for families, teachers, clinicians, and researchers....Dr. Durand is to be congratulated for this excellent, timely contribution.' --Robert H. Horner, Ph.D.
Durand's seminal work represents the new wave' in the treatment of behavioral problems....The approach enables one to get inside the head' of the behaviorally troubled individual through a most comprehensive assessment and treatment program.' --Robert Gaylord-Ross, Ph.D.

Durand's book is useful on so many fronts for those supporting people with learning disabilities who have challenging behaviours. Family carers, staff and other professionals are walked through the process. There is a Motivational Assessment Scale tool to aid in determining function (purpose of behaviour). Each function, that is, attention, tangible, sensory and escape, is dealt with separately with plenty of constructive ideas - through use of case studies - to teach replacement behaviours. Durand advocates non-aversive methods that will have the widest validity among those who genuinely seek to improve the life of people with learning disabilities. It is accessibly written with minimal use of technical language.

Functional Communication Training is an essential strategy to any multi-element positive behaviour support plan. It is also of great value to those simply seeking to develop the disabled person's communication skills (and our ability to communicate with them). A must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars good read! 8 Feb. 2005
By NJ Reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Easy read for families and teachers. He discusses using requesting skills to replace instances of severe behavior. He explains in detail how to get a child to mand for breaks rather than engage in disruptive behavior. However, a person can design a plan to replace the break requests with whatever the child needs to match the behavior function they are seeking (e.g. attention, tangibles, etc.).

5.0 out of 5 stars Approaching behavior scientifically 25 Jun. 2002
By Bobby Newman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Dr. Durand presents an easily understood, yet technically tight, presentation of functional communication training. Dr. Durand provides an excellent demonstration of the applied analysis of behavior and provides a framework for understanding that behavior. This book should be read by anyone and everyone who works with individuals with communiction difficulties who are engaging in troubling behavior.
