Man,what a brilliant effort by crowbar.I have only listened to it once but absolutely loving it.
Musically the album is very different from the last album lifesblood ..
This album combines the best of earlier,as in very early crowbar in terms of the straight in your face heaviness and playing style but importantly combines the melody and agonizing downtune and slowness of odd fellows rest.
The most important factor here is Kirk's Vocal. He has always been good and unique but he has definitely found a second wing.It is more powerful and refined as the album goes through straight in the face punk inspired brutality and heavy doom.
All in all this album is a grower and it is going to be one of the best Metal releases of this year...
To Quote Kirk,"I may be old and fat,but I will give you a lesson in Slow and Heavy!!".

Unlike the other reviewer I didn't fall in love with this album from the first listen, although there are a few standout tracks. But after a week in the car stereo I can safely say I absolutely love this.

As with a lot of metal I think the vocals are the divisive thing. Some people love Kirk's voice, other's don't. But there is nothing divisive about the immense heaviness of the music that fills this CD which all true metal heads should appreciate. I can't think of another band that consistently comes up with such brutal riffs. Absolutely awesome.

And if you ever get the chance to see Crowbar live, do it.

Hey, I'm an old hardcore fan of heavy metal music, but this is a monumental album by a band that I've loved from day 1. Thank you guys, this is epic!!!!! At last, a metal band that remember their roots. I'd give my heart and soul to you!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Crowbar. 4 Mar. 2012
By Peter Faden - Published on Amazon.com

You know, sometimes, no matter how much things change, some things always stay the same. Crowbar has managed to maintain their sound for what is now around 20 years or so. I remember seeing them at the Main Event and hanging out at the Last Stop in Metairie once or twice when i lived in Fat City back in the early 90's, and then a few times over the years since then around the country. When you get Crowbar, you get that heavy, sludgy riffage that favors single note progressions over straight power chords, with a definite Sabbath sensibility. You get the inevitable influence of Pepper Keenan and Pantera (no surprise since they are friends and came from the same scene (well, Pepper and Phil did anyway), plus of course their time in Down), you get introspective pained and troubled lyrics, and an overall soul shaking experience. One of my favorite bands, and definitely one that has been under appreciated over the years.

Give it a listen and Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Crowbar album in years and years 20 Feb. 2011
By Ian C. Murphy - Published on Amazon.com

I've been listening to Crowbar since their debut back in the early 90s. I have always been a fan but their albums are a bit uneven, often with a lot of songs that, well, sound kinda the same.

With Sever the Wicked Hand, Kirk has created maybe best album of his career, the songs are varied and musically a bit more complex, while still having the classic Crowbar chug. There is simply no filler. Highly recommended to all metal fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy. 30 Mar. 2011
By Clay L. - Published on Amazon.com

The new drummer aids in bringing the heavy. Was one of those discs I bought and listened to for only a real little bit, let somebody borrow it, got it back and just jammed to even harder the next time around. "The Cemetery Angels" is no doubt my favorite track on here. However, I just CANNOT get into track 7, it completely throws the feel of this album off a cliff for a moment, then pulls it right back up with heavy. Personaly, the tune could have easily been taken off the album, but still a great NEW Crowbar CD regardless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crowbar Rebirth 19 April 2011
By Dangerous Dave - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I consider this to be a re-birth for Crowbar. The lyrics and album cover clearly show an overcoming an obstacle or burden. Lyrics seem to be goal driven filled with strength and will to overcome. The music has a more mature sound, but still has Crowbar's signature low tuned growl. True fans will not be disappointed. Crowbar: Still Heavier Than All XXXXL.
