...and some albums you love. This is one you love. There is so much gushing rubbish written about bands, singer/songwriters - as Zappa so memorably said 'written by people who can't write for people who can't read' - but Seven Swans requires superlatives; Small is very often good - you can U2 or Coldplay us to death, but the gentle and authentic Call is rarely heard - an intelligent voice, coupled with sensitive, subtle and thoughtful playing, and to add to the mix - a genuine feeling throughout of spiritual growth, life affirming zest, and the ultimate pre-requisite for all really great artists - self deprecation. This is not the work of some self pitying slacker whining about life - but a real star, blazing his trail.

I got hold of this after listening to Illinoise which I thought utterly exceptional. I first listened to this thinking it could be nowhere near as good as that album because surely nobody has THAT much talent. Wow....how wrong you can be. This is beautiful, truly magnificent. It doesn't compare with Illinoise in its epic scope. But for what it lacks in that direction it more than makes up for in its extraordinarily beautiful music and singing. Yes the songs are pretty religious and if like me you're not turned on by that kind of thing don't worry, the music is so good that it just doesn't overpower you. Particularly good are the tracks "The Dress Looks Nice On You" very folksy with probably the best banjo music I've heard (not that I'm one for that kind of thing usually!) and "In The Devil's Territory" with it's building rhythm throughout. Other standout tracks include "Abraham" and "We Won't Need Legs To Stand". It really is beautiful throughout, very different from Illinoise but in its own way just as good.

Sufjan Stevens reinforces his place as one of the leading musicians in the world today. Soft vocals over haunting melodies make this album a must have. If you like Bonny Prince Billy or Iron and Wine then you will love this album.

Genius is an over-used word, and I am not sure if Sufjan Stevens is worthy of it or not. However, one thing is for sure, and that is the fact that he is the closest that I have come to it for many a year.

'Seven Swans' is sparse compared to the later, equally magnificent, offerings that have kicked his American States project off,but there is something very special about the sparser approach on this album - an album on which the troubadour finally found his voice.

The lyrics are as original, off-beat and downright quirky as ever, while the simple melodies are totally beguiling. It could so easily cross the line into the awful territories of twee, but it is the way that Sufjan Stevens walks this tightrope perfectly that makes him a rare talent.

Who would have thought that intense pop songs featuring acoustic guitar and banjo could be so engrossing? A record that puts a smile on my face every time I play it, and what more could I ask for? HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I think that says it all. Recorded in a barn with his friends, the songs are, indeed, beautiful, heartfelt and uplifting. They give you that lovely warm glow inside and you can't ask for a better recommendation than that.

...I thought I would this album difficult to love....and I always thought of it as a bit of a filler between the the "states" albums. I was wrong on both counts. The lyrics are explicitly drawn from the Bible but they are sincere and do not preach. The melodies are quite beautiful and haunting and that banjo weaves wonders. This is Sufjan's best album.

Buy it for someone you love.

Classic folk singers choice
What can i say? Anybody who likes Dylan, Bonnie Prince Billy, Bill Callahan, Laura Marling, Nick Drake etc etc is going to love this with a passion. A medley of guitar, banjo's, drums, bass, tunes and lyrics to make your day better.
Owned for many years on CD - and just bought the vinyl - which arrived on bright pink marbled 140g vinyl, with a free 7" on grey marbled vinyl. Beautiful matt sleeve, with lyrics and cool line drawings that deserve to be seen on 12" cardboard.
the music is timeless, the lyrics are Christian/ God centric - but also speak of universal truths.

Check out this classic, before the kitchen sink was added to make the almost as good, but less simple Illinois.

This is a breathtakingly epic beautiful intimate record and a creation of pure human integrity. If you truely want passion and truth in your music then buy this.
It is not only intelligent and joyous and dream like, it is wonderfully orchestrated. More sincerity and invention and ideas in the first 60 seconds of this record than the likes of Damian Rice can muster in a whole record.
Stop a moment, listen and breath in the cool air of this record. it may just save you.
