I think Blue Byte has a brass neck selling items for a game in Beta form.
The game is a prime example of that dismal feature of game design: awkwardness for the sake of awkwardness. I have bought Settlers 3,4, and 5, and now this trash and I will be spending no more money with this company.

The time it takes to have even the simplest thing done is ridiculous; you cannot stop the game when you log out; you cannot restart after making beginner's mistakes so you're pretty much stuck with them; and the combat system is a farce. There is a downright feeling of monotony as you send your geologists to look for marble time after time after time; the game should be called Marble Hunt.
The price of advanced items from the BB shop is ruinous and you can't help but feel that the Strategy of Blue Byte was to trade on the reputation of earlier Settlers games and extract as much money as possible with this half-baked piece of work.
Even the comical charm of the earlier games is gone. There are plenty of other on-line games.

Overall I find this game fun and absorbing. Some of the other comments relate to the multiplayer interaction. Player verses player fighting isn't in it yet, but they plan to expand it. Its more at this point about setting up resource chains and manufacturing. (more similar to Anno 1404 than the original settlers.)
I agree on the roads though, that used to be part of the challenge, now they are just for show.
Overall, still good. It eats my time away. This online pack is just to fast track you. If you play ir regularly online, dip in, update and come back tomorrow, you dont need it. If you want to be the one who is on the trade channel, buy and selling and making a massive town then I guess you already own one, two or more of them anyway!

Settlers Online is a free-to-play settlement management game from the makers of the Setters series. It is not a PvP wargame, but a settlement management game where the focus is on slowly building up your fledgeling village into an economic powerhouse. Combat plays a part of course. After the tutorial ends you will be defeating NPC enemies to make progress, firstly on your own map and later on separate adventure zones, using an ever increasing array of troop types to deal out death. Combat is required to progress, but the roadblocks to success all tend to be how fast your economy can produce bread, swords and beer to make more soldiers rather than the actual killing of the enemies. It's a game to play a couple of hours a day, every day for weeks and months, rather than one you can play solidly for a week and complete. Clever tactics both in building placement and combat choices do play a part and the forums are full of helpful guides telling you how to minimise your losses and maximise your progress, if you choose to read around the subject. If not there is much pleasure to be had working it out for yourself.

This "starter pack" is not essential to play the game and I would recommend that you try The Settlers Online out online before purchase. By the time you have completed the tutorial you will have a much better idea if you want to unlock the extra features that are provided in the pack. None of them are essential to play but they all make progress a little easier. If you decide you like the game enough to give Ubisoft/Blue Byte some money then there is no question that the pack is much better value for money than purchasing gems piecemeal from the in-game shop.
