Product Description

Product Description

Build ships, set sail, and conquer the magnificent island world of Catan. Nine voyages of discovery are awaiting the settlers of Catan. The expansion can also be combined with “Traders & Barbarians” and “Cities & Knights.” Requires the Base Game to play. A campaign with many varied scenarios awaits you. First, you head for new shores. You leave Catan, land on neighboring islands, and receive special victory points whenever you are the first to settle an island. Then your ships explore entirely uncharted regions and discover either sea or land. Soon, you will meet the mysterious forgotten tribe and court its favor. Meanwhile, the pirates are becoming more audacious. You defend yourself and conquer the pirates' nests. For the glory of Catan, you finally compete with your opponents to build the most imposing wonders of the world. The Seafarers expansion contains new frame pieces, which can be used to assemble frames of variable size. In these frames, you lay out combinations of islands that are always different, using the hexes from the Base Game and additional hexes from the expansion set - either as shown in the scenario diagrams or according to your own imagination. The rules for placing ships are similar to the rules for placing roads on land. There is, however, one important exception: you may change the position of the front ships of a shipping route! That way, you can respond more flexibly to your opponents' actions and possibly be the first to reach an unsettled, productive island. Other new features are the gold fields, which help their neighbors obtain any type of resource, and the pirate, who causes unrest on the peaceful seas.

Box Contains

• 6 Frame Pieces
• 19 Sea Hexes
• 11 Terrain Hexes
• 50 Catan Chits
• 10 Number Tokens
• 10 Harbor Tokens
• 60 Wooden Ships (15 x 4 Colors)
• 1 Pirate Ship
• 1 Games Rules

We have played Settlers of Catan and really enjoyed it and had not realised how much the Seafarers expansion increases the options of how you play. It doesn't just add the new dimension of the sea, you can play with many different layouts of the board with slightly differing rules and objectives. You don't ever have to get bored with playing the same game. We particularly enjoyed the Wonders of Catan version in which you have to adapt to a completely different strategy because the objective is not to win by acheiving the required number of victory points but by building a Wonder of Catan.

We are also impressed by the guality of the card from which the pieces are constructed and the thought that has gone into the arrangements within the box for storage. A first class game and worth the additional expense to buy this expansion.

This game is underrated, its big in other countries but not here in the UK and it should be, its easy to understand, simplistic gameplay means you can be playing for hours and not notice. This is an expansion to the first main game The Settlers of Catan (New Edition) and adds a great new variety to the already brilliant fun, giving a larger playing area and new gameplay techniques. If you give this game a try you can discover its hidden greatness as others across europe have, it rivals the long lasting competitors such as monopoly and cluedo with its uniqueness. It can also be enhanced with the 5-6 player expansions The Settlers of Catan 5 & 6 Player Extension Catan: Seafarers 5-6 Player Extension

Following countless games the the original settlers board game, me and my mates decided we wanted a bit more variety, without changing the rules too much. This expansion is just perfect for that.

The difference is a bigger board (increased sea hexes to create islands, the introduction of boats (like roads but can be moved, must be touching at least one sea hex), the pirate (robber on sea hex), longest trade route (longest road but taking into account boats)and the fantastic instruction booklet.

The thing that makes this board game worth purchasing is the sheer amount of scenarios you can play. Each one is fun, not complicated and compelling. They can even be played in a chronological order which involves a little story. Some make the game really even, regardless of who starts first, which I found really refreshing.

This game is supposed to be closer to the creators original vision - increased exploration. It encourages expansion to other island and territories. Saying that there are countless other paths to victory!

The tiles have survived many beer spillages, and are generally well made. I only wish there was a better way to house all the pieces, perhaps somehow connecting to the original set. The box is exactly the same size as original game - not really ideal for an expansion, as I have to carry both around to play. I can only wonder how much extra cardboard you would receive for the player expansions! Minor gripe though.

Overall, if you liked normal Catan then this expansion is a must. It's easy, not super expensive - but adds so much more variety to the game.

I was very disappointed when I bought this as it is not compatible with our older version of Settlers of Catan (Pre-2007 apparently). I did not know this information when I bought it and so when all excited and ready to play at christmas, we were especially disappointed to find the connection pieces would not fit together.

You can buy an additional 'adapter kit' that allows for the older version of Catan to fit with this Seafarers extension, which we have now done.

On a more positive note it does look like a very exciting game and we are looking forward to being able to play it once our adapter kit arrives.
Hope this review is useful to anyone with the older version of Catan.

I think this is the adapter kit that allows one to play with this version

Great expansion!! Most have. This expansion feels very natural and stays true to Catan's original game. Whoever bought the original and fell in love with it should get this one as well! The original was fairly easy to exhaust in mine opinion (not that you would always win), but the pace of the game becomes quite clear. With this addition to keep the excitement in there is much more strategies that keeps the game fairly even and thus exciting. If you don't mind lengthy games then seafarer is a definite must. It can easily take over 90 min with 3 ppl and possibly more with 4ppl. The only downside I think is the initial outlay. Now if for example you want to play the original game occasionally then you need to be careful as not to mix the hexes and other pieces together and with the bigger terrain the initial outlay takes more time as well. Other than the setting up the game and cleaning up after, the game itself is superb fun!

We love Settlers and this is our favourite expansion set so far. This game deserves to be a best seller. I love the extra dimension of sailing across to new lands to build further settlements. This expansion adds to the basic concept of the game without making it complicated.
