Annihilator are quite possibly the most underrated metal band on the planet. Dismissed by certain magazines and ignored by many fans of the genre, the band have soldiered on regardless and consistently delivered album after album of quality, melodic thrash metal.

Band Leader Jeff waters is not only a great songwriter but a truly astonishing guitarist. These qualities are highly evident on "Set the world on Fire". Rather than being a one dimensional slab of ultra speedy thrash, the record reveals the sheer range of the bands considerable musical repertoire. There is the usual quota of power riffing, but the heavier numbers are tempered by mellower tunes such as "Sounds Good to Me" and the beautiful "Phoenix Rising", which show that when they choose to write in a catchy, mainstream style Annihilator can do it better than many of their more illustrious peers.

If you're an old-school metaller who has become disillusioned with the the state of modern metal and are looking for a reminder of what made the genre great in the 80's and early 90's, this could be what you're looking for!

A finely-crafted piece of melodic metal at its best! Obviously the guitar-work is first-class as you would expect, but also imbued with tasteful melodies. "Brain Dance" is a masterpiece, as is "Knigh Jumps Queen", showing both edgy darkness and a sense of humour. The nearest it comes to letting itself down is "Sounds Good To Me" which is dangerously close to soppy, but still very well crafted.
All in all, very impressive!

This album is amazing. But the review it's about the track list. The disc only have 10 tracks in it, not 11 like the description said. That made me sad :(
(Im from Spain, despite the bad english)

For all you metal lovers, if its thrash you want this is it. The lyrics are good but the raw music, instrumentally in a league of its own. You WON'T be dissapointed.

I don't really own anything else by annihilator, but I've owned this album for many years now and it still blows me away. There is a lot of drive behind this album - heavy guitar power chords and epically fast licks and solos, gritty but talented vocals, fast and driven drum beats and some funky bass lines. A good combination for a true classic metal album. But as well as a good mix of truly amazing heavy classics, there is a more mature and calm integration of songs that break up the album nicely. Despite being a very dark sounding album, the lyrics however are easy to listen to and surprisingly very un-aggressive. I listened to the album recently upon realising the drummer for this album is non other than the new Dream Theater drummer and come to appreciate even more the slick drumming that really adds to this album - although here we have a more tame Mike Mangini who doesn't push himself to the forefront of the music. All in all the songs are well written and the melodies incredibly catchy, but most important of all the band sound like they work great together - which is a difficult achievement in such a constantly changing line up. If you're a fan of good old classic metal then this is definitely a worthy CD to add to your collection
