There is a timeless quality to this album - indeed to the voice and music of Catherine Russell. You almost feel like you could be listening to a contemporary of Lena Horne or Ella Fitzgerald or any of the other great female vocalists of their time.

And that is just what Catherine Russell is - a great female vocalist!

Born to artistically influential musical parents - Luis Russell (The Luis Russell Orchestra) and Carline Ray (bassist and vocalist with The International Sweethearts of Rhythm) - Catherine has inherited a wonderful musical talent. This is a woman born to sing Jazz, who has rubbed shoulders with some of the most influential players in the Jazz scene since childhood (the album booklet includes photos of Catherine as a child in the arms of Louis Armstrong).

What comes across very strongly is the feeling that Catherine was born to sing Jazz. Immersed in the influence of the Jazz scene since childhood, Catherine is perfectly matched to this music which is in her heart. An inherited yet unique talent, distilled to perfection, the music is in her very soul.

This is an album that I am certainly glad to have in my collection and it is one that I will never tire of listening to, that I will play over and over. If you like good music then this is for you. Just put this album on the hifi or the mp3 player/ipod, kick off your shoes and find yourself transported by Catherine's sublime voice to a timeless place.

This is a wonderful album filled with traditional-style jazz songs delivered in fine style by Catherine Russell. The CD comes with a fascinating booklet detailing Catherine's fine musical pedigree - clearly her destiny was sealed from birth. Many of the tracks were originally recorded by great names such as Louis Armstrong, Hoagy Carmichael and Ella Fitzgerald and it's great to hear Catherine's take on these fine old classics. Her voice has a very modern sound yet the arrangements are traditional which gives the album a truly timeless feel. Great stuff.

Sometimes when reviewing CDs on the Vine one hits a pure gem and by George (Melly?), Catherine Russell has one of the sweetest jazz voices I've ever heard. She takes the songs on this CD and produces sheer magic from each and every one of them. In this she is aided by a superb backing band, but it is her delivery that takes and grabs the listener by the heart.
I'm so struck I'm going to spend my own money on some more CDs by this lady; she has good jazz lineage (daughter of Luis Russell) and she clearly has New Orleans flowing through her.....

I did a double-take when I read the bio on Catherine Russell that comes with this CD. Looking at her picture on the front cover I guessed that she was about 30 but then I noticed that her late father Luis Russell - a good friend of Louis Armstromg - was born in 1902! Huh? That was 106 years ago! But it turns out that Catherine is no newcomer to the musical world, despite this being only her second album, as she was born in 1956 so yes, now I can see that the numbers add up! Her debut album CAT came out a couple of years ago, I haven't heard it yet but I certainly like the follow-up. Some of the songs were written the best part of a century ago, including 'You've Got that Thing' which was her own father's composition, and 'New Orleans' by the late great Hoagy Carmichael. There are few attempts (imho) to modify any of the songs for the contemporary listener, the only giveaway is the modern, high-tech quality of the recording but other than that this is an affectionate throwback to jazz of a bygone era. Not what I normally listen to, in truth, but more than pleasant all the same. Catherine Russell has spent a significant part of her career touring with the likes of Steely Dan, Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, Jackson Browne and David Bowie but it's clear that she's now very much a singer in her own right, and if classic jazz from the early/mid 20th century appeals to you then you are likely to find 'Sentimental Streak' a satisfying listen down memory lane.

Catherine has a pleaseant enougy voice but I was very disappointed with the choice of songs, there was nothing really inspiring. I also think the delivery of the vocals was lacking in something, maybe the soul that only age and experience can bring to this kind of jazz. I would like to come back to her in a couple of years to see what she does next because the album made me feel she has potential.

I pounced on this two years ago fresh off the back of an Ella Fitzgerald obsession. I was going through a 'omg jazz!!' phase (which has now cooled off, yet to this day this CD never strays far from my player). I'll admit I didn't know what to expect - this was my first taste of 'modern' jazz n blues that wasn't just another person covering the classics (not that there's anything wrong with the cole porter songbook, but I like variety). I needn't have worried.

Catherine has a beautiful voice, the lyrics are mellow and playful and often made me laugh, and I don't think there is a single track on here I don't love. And I can't say that about many albums sitting on my CD shelf!! My favourites? Lazy That's All - it's the story of my life. Kitchen Man, which grew on me despite the daft and rather saucy lyrics (his bologny is really worth a try...!) and the chorus to Luci...my favourite track and the only really slow, soulful number...is just flat out gorgeous and enough to give you shivers. Thrill Me is gently upbeat and enough to get you bobbing along to the rhythm, and the lyrics to I Don't Care Who Knows are just hilarious. Loving it.

To be honest, you wouldn't know this was 'modern' jazz at all, it sounds like the classics. It's that good. Within a few plays you'll know all the words and have a soft spot for at least three of the songs, guaraunteed. This even made me search out other Catherine Russell albums! Recommended if you like easy listening and something amiable and fun to snap your fingers to.
