Amy has a sad/happy/hard life.
It got me so engrossed that it had me in tears in parts and I just wanted to give Amy a hug. In other parts, I could have given the rest of her family a good shake to wake them up as to what was going on.
I very good read and I recommend it.
I have now bought the other 3 in the series to read, as I would like to see how Amy's life pans out and if there is payback time in the end.
I've never read anything set in NZ before and wouldn't normally have looked at it but 'Sentence of Marriage' came up free of charge in my Amazon UK Recommendations so I took a chance and was hooked.
I read all five books through in about six days!!! Now I'm going to sleep/eat/shop etc but I couldn't leave them, these characters took over my life almost like my own family and I just had to know what happened to them. I loved them, hated them, got cross and sad. I can't remember when I've felt so invested in characters!
The stories as well are so rich in terms of social customs, lifestyle, issues (domestic abuse/ education of women etc) all set against a realistic but unobtrusive historical and geographical background. Based around the inter-connected lives of a rural extended family there's a real sense of feel-good factor to these books which is in no way smaltzy. There's also a good share of the 'horror' of life in them which is realistic and believable, as are the human interactions and relationships.
I could go on and on but I won't! 5 star reads and worth every penny, if not more!
