Fast paced, short, very well written. Rather less climactic than I anticipated but I kinda liked that. Not absolutely totally convinced I "got it".

I have read this novella three times now, with gaps of a few years between each go, most recently before I see the film (and this time I pictured the film's cast as the characters as I read). I still can't quite get a handle on the ending and hope the filmmakers' interpretation will help. It's a compulsive read and I'll probably read it again at some point. I definitely get more out of it each time.

Another brilliant novel from Julian Barnes. I hope the film adaptation does it justice!

Mostly quite readable until the last few pages when the denouement takes place. 'Tony' finally 'gets it' but I, as the reader, don't. I know I am poor at inference in life generally and, in this instance, I need Tony to spell out what he 'got'. As he hasn't, the book fails for me at the last - I've read an interesting story of which the conclusion has been concealed.

Just didn't grab me from the outset, couldn't care about the characters and finally gave in . I gave 2 stars as it may have got better.

Reading this book after seeing the film enhanced the latter very enjoyable experience. One gets the sense, if not of an Ending, of penultimacy, of remorse and strangely of peace. Superbly observed and written, the story should be required reading for all enrolled in the university of life.

Gulped it down like a gourmet meal. Not a wasted word. Interesting story. Highly recommended - it won't disappoint. Not sure if I want to see the film now.

A typically sparse, emotionally desiccated novel about history, action and reaction and consequence. Tony, a man of a certain age living and partly living reflects on the unremarkable nature of a life that has largely passed him by.
